Hyper might enjoy but he is migrating to the wrong country because 600 Australians are given days off from work when there is an additional pet in the family by their company.

FIRST we had maternity leave, then came paternity leave. And now we have "pet-ernity" leave.

Virgin Mobile has offered five unpaid days off to staff who have a new puppy or kitten.

"We recognise that our staff may want to be at home for the first week or so with their new addition, to settle the pet and get them used to their surrounds," a company spokeswoman said.

She said the leave was an acknowledgment that not all staff would have babies.

"However, most staff at some point will have a new kitten or puppy that will need lots of care. So why not acknowledge this?" she said.

Jeff Smith, who works at Virgin Mobile in Melbourne, said he planned to investigate the new "pet-ernity" leave entitlement.

"I already have a dog, a three-year-old Jack Russell named Russell," he said.

But he planned to adopt another dog when he moved into a house with a garden.

"I'd definitely consider using it. When you have a baby, you have to get he or she settled in, and it's the same when with a new pet," he said.

The Virgin Mobile spokeswoman said the scheme was only available to those with puppies and kittens aged 10 weeks or under.

The pet-ernity leave will not apply to other pets, and employees must provide a statutory declaration.

The scheme is available to members of Virgin's 600-strong Australian workforce who have worked for the company for more than two years.

Not a bad move but is this sanctioned in law?
We have a myriad of reasons for leave in Europe; including death in the family, christening(waqlal) and caring for a sick child (this is consuming alot of money)

Years ago, in the Nordic countries, one could get social security benefits for pets ; if you live on welfare and had a dog/cat, you'd be given allowance.

This is excellent and compassionate idea.

This is a private business owned by the British hipster billionaire tycoon Richard Branson who is offering these maternity/paternity leave for his employees who are new pet owners. He is a master of spin for his businesses and the undisputed king of marketing. The argument is based on the notion that if employees who have children are allowed parental leave, how about those who haven't and don't want to children, but at the sametime consider their pets as their children? Don't they deserve day offs to welcome their new puppies into their lives? Pets in the western world are regarded as fully fledged family members. The appeal is to that sentiment.

If not all, the majority of the OECD countries do have bereavement and carers leave. This isn't enshrined by law, but it is a gift from a "enlightened" boss to his workforce. Imagine the response of the general public and their regards towards his businesses? Their judgement of him will be as a "noble" and caring boss towards his staff and their animals? Cheap marketing.

I was laughing all the way since the headline.... until I saw that comment. It is indeed a cheap marketing.

Morally I would never place children the same par as pets though!

I once asked this lady if she had kids and she told me she had two dogs. She talked about them like they were her own kids.
