http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/04/j ... 10977.htmlJordan's parliament has passed several constitutional amendments giving King Abdullah more powers, including the right to appoint the head of a top court and members of the senate.
The King was also granted the power to appoint his own regent and crown prince.
State-owned news agency Petra said the amendments were passed with 123 votes in favour out of 142. The parliament has a total of 150 MPs.
The changes gave the King the right to make key appointments by royal decree without any nomination process by the government or signatures from the Council of Ministers.
In 2015, the parliament passed a previous constitutional amendment that gave Abdullah the power to hire and fire the heads of the army and the intelligence services.
Before that amendment, and those on Thursday, he had only power to directly appoint the prime minister.
Petra said the amendments "aim to strengthen the principle of separation of powers, boost the independence of the Constitutional Court and the judiciary and enhance the neutrality of the gendarmerie in politics."

Re: Democracy not meant for the arabs
There's no such thing as democracy. If democracy was such a wonderful concept to the western powers that be,they wouldn't have come up with the idea of having a veto in the UN.
Even their own elections are carefully steered towards certain parties and individuals that won't rock the boat.Or upset the influence of those who are really in charge behind the scenes

Just because there is nothing like perfection , it doesn't mean we cannot aspire and work for it
Democracy does exist ,not up for debate
There are a lot more viable democracies in this world then represented in the United Nations Security Council

Chaos , mayhem , humiliation , and all these other bad stuff are unfortunately if we look back at the history of the modern democracies a necessary transition towards a greater equality among what initially constitutes tribes that merge into nation -states .
There is nothing unique that hasn't happened elsewhere that is happening to us as Somalis . We're gonna come out stronger I am convinced

Re: Democracy not meant for the arabs
people need a republic, with checks and balances not a democracy.
people forget that democracy is far inferior to a republic.
Sahan you are a americano-phile
you should know that the framers of the US constitution were deathly afraid of democracy,
they worked so hard to build a republic.
the US became a democracy much later when the checks and balances started failing.
probably around civil war times.
it is now not even a democracy,
its well on the way to the natural cycle of democracies, i.e dictatorship because it is an oligarchy now.
sooner or later the number of oligarchs will shrink, and there will only be one..

Re: Democracy not meant for the arabs
Democracy: The term originates from the Greek δημοκρατία (dēmokratía) "rule of the people"
Gurey, the balance and check system is not part of a democratic system. You are right, it is the republic system! Democracy is ALL about "people" ! People vote and they feel like they are part of the system. Whether ---the rigged elections of the Africans or eastern Europe democracy elections of corrupt manipulations, or the Western like US elections where special interests and oligarchs decided and not the people. (Basically the people are bought because they are poor)
IN the future---which is sort of beginning now--the true definition of democracy will arise. The establishments will be kicked out and true demo will take form. For instance- Obamas election was a big surprise and the beginning of that era of democracy just like In France---the revolution was the beginning of French Democracy!
PS Unfortunately Bernie and Trump are part of the democracy revolutions, but---establishments like Hillary are NOT going any where soon!
By the way: Arabs are not meant to have democracy. That's right. Arabs don't have individuality syndrome like the west have. With Arabs--it is a group mentality vs individual. Somalis included----Look Somalia---there was peace when Baare abused them for many years. The same with Gadafi,, and Sadaam ! Muslims --Somalis included need a strong leader who will karbash them and treat them like slaves in order for them to respect him. Arabs and Somalis need a leader based on fear and not liberte!
WHat say u on my theory gurey?

A republic : definition -->a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.gurey25 wrote:people need a republic, with checks and balances not a democracy.

A democracy : defnition -->a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
A democratic system is the natural option for a Republic , without which it become a dictatorship .
