Somaliland 1920 (pictures)

Berbera

The camel corps. Not only did they help eradicate the al Shabab of the day (Dervishes), they later gave birth to the Somali National Army. That's why both the army and police in both SL and Somalia use their kudu logo.

My grandfather was member of Somaliland Scouts. He was tall as these guys. Never chewed khat, never smoke. In his late 80s he could walk from dhuurta to London. Odaygaas Oday ka adadag weligay ma arag.

Someone told me Barbara used to be Samaroon city before the Habar Awal kicked them out with the hepl of HY and HJ. Subsequently the Samaroon moved to Seylac where they kicked the Ciisa out and as a result the Ciise moved to Djibouti and kicked the Habar Awal and Samaroon out. All this happened before the colonial powers had come to the horn .

How true is this ?

I don't think so. Zeila was always a Samaroon predominately degaan. We always used to have a few aqeels or chiefs more than the Ciise. Berbera was Ciise Muuse, but had many clans often living there or visiting it like Zeila, especially also since it was the capital of the protectorate.

Dervishes were radicals like present day al Shabab. Salafism was their main doctrine where as Wahabism fuels al shabab.

Salafism was not wide spread in the Somali peninsula until Sayid Abdalle Hassan who was Quranic schooled in Sudan where he picked up the ideas.

Dervishes already existed in Sudan and was ran by the Mahdi of Sudan. Sayid Abdalle saw himself as a minor Mahdi same way Al Shabab leaders see themselves as minors of al Qaeda.

So the main issue was radicalization and they used the British to radicalize locals in the same minor al shabab used the US and Ethiopian incursion.

Basically they were the terrorist of the day without suicide bomb belts.

The Great Habar Yoonis poet Qaasim would be crying in his grave upon realizing some of his offsprings are still following the footsteps of Ina-Igare. Calool xumuu u dhiman lahaa walee....According to Abwaan Axmed Ismaaciil Diiriye better known as Qaasim, the Dervishes were solely responsible for giving Somalia its indeoendece from the white colonial powers:
Here are the true words of the great poet!!!
Allow yaa Darwiishkii farriin debecsan gaadhsiiya
Allow yaa dadkaagii yidhaa dawladnimo qaaday
Allow yaa dabbaaldegiyo farax kala dul eedaama
Fardaha yaa dirkii dhooddi meer doona faracdiisa
Allow yaa darmaan farataqaan duqa u kooreeya
Allow yaa duleeddada Taleex uga dammaashaada
Dhaaxuu ku daakiray xaqoo naga dahsoonaaye
Ha daawado dadkow hiiliyo doogga soobbaxaye
Allow yaa dalluuntiyo qabriga dib uga soo saara
In dariiqadi nooshahay ooy dunida soo gaadhey
Oo dabkuu shiday rag kale dogobbo sii saaray
Allow yaa af lama daaliyee daacad ugu sheega!

That is just not true at all. They were very ineffective terrorist group of the 19th century. Olol diini and the great Biimaal revolt was more successful but it's not often talked about because of the darood regime of yesteryears decided to cover up whilst elevating the Dervish movement to much more than it really was.

The Dervish were defeated humiliated and run out of town by the isaaq great warriors of Ina Igarre and Xaaji Waraabe.

They accomplished absolutely nothing.

So are you saying Axmed Ismaaciil Diiriye who, by the way, was one of the greatest critics of Afweyne is not telling the truth in that poem. He was one of the very first people to object Afweyne's policies. Do we need to disregard all his rich poems???
