Saudi Arabia gives women the right to a copy of their marriage contract

Saudi brides will now get a copy of their marriage contracts, a privilege that was previously exclusive to men in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the kingdom’s justice ministry has announced.

According to a directorate issued by the justice minister, Walid al-Samaani, clerics who register marriage contracts will now have to hand a copy to the bride “to ensure her awareness of her rights and the terms of the contract”.

The decision aims to “protect the rights of the woman and facilitate procedures for her”, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.

It said the decision took into consideration that a woman would need a copy of her marriage contract in case of a dispute with her husband and in court.

Women need the permission of their male guardians to get married under Saudi Arabia’s interpretations of Islamic law. They also need that permission to travel and work, in a country where they are not allowed to drive and have to cover from head to toe when in public.

I can't believe that this is actually news. Well actually I can because it's not like women have ever had rights in this country. I'm just wondering because the people who live in the country are so oppressed and repressed, there must a lot of madness and illegality going on e.g. drugs etc.

I'm not against women or their rights in SA. But they need to focus big things such injustice, forcing girls to marry against their wishes. Not driving!

wayeel, i did not shift but i am with the rights God given people. Saudis and their society far from true islam and still we argueing they have their rights for their culture. fine!! it's culture and i would leave it that way. i just be hypocrite when i just gor my 17 years old a car before her license and deny others same rights.

Saudi rulars cannot keep people in the cage forever. God create them free and not all of them believe the same. culture can change and meant to change otherwise they would still travel by camel's back.

Hyper, wallahi you're soft hearted miskin person. People who take this issue in national/international level don't speak about the rights of poor workers from Asia and other places. That's injustice brother the day of qiyamah Allah will not ask you why you were not allowed women to drive, but you will asked the Bangladeshi who worked under the burning sun 7 days a week and in the end not getting his full salary.

ps; not only driving, even having marriage certificate, do you know how many poor women that were married and denied them after taken their new born? they have no proof they are married and also she doesnt even know the witnesses!! cause that was rights thy were denied by government.

giving them driving rights also empowers them and illiminate them to depends those kind of men.
