Any Yemen Somalis on this site?

Post by drobbah »

Anyone here has family that lived in Yemen? Not talking about recent qaxooti but your family that has been there for generations?

The area of Aden my family resided in and where there since it started out as a small village during British times..

Still have a home there but it is probably destroyed during the recent fighting between Houthis and South Yemenis....Did you know that reer woqooyi and south yemenis share alot of vocab like laxoox and triig(light) etc. These words are not found in North yemen and South Somalia which is interesting....

Somalis especially reer shekh isxaaq goes way back living and trading in Aden, in 1849 number of permanent resident of somali origin was over 2000 somalis.

My family lived in Aden like 3 generations back,i think my 3 grandfather first came to aden before or on 1900,they managed to make a stable business that lasted for 3 generations.
my family still lives in sheekh cuthman area, specifically in Qahira area, somalis indeed used to live like kings back then, the British favored them along with the indians over the yemenis ( b4 the british used to call them just arabs).
A lot reer Caden used to speak Somali or at least understand it, the most famous somali xafado was tawahi, bureeqa,,creter, zacfarana, al mansoorah, qalooca, the later was derived from afsomali ( Qaloocan ) like zigzag road.

even the word xaafa is of somali origin and it is a common word used by yemenis.

during the British colonization, all the administrative posts were only filled by Britons but I remember my family told me the first non-British high officer was a Somali,i think HA, if not mistaken his name was rooble....also one of the most famous masajid in Mucala , masjid alaxmadiya was built by the old somali community ,one of my very distant relatives was the founder of that masjid..sheekh mohamed yusuf, who was a follower of the axmadiya suufism back then.

what I like about reer cadmeed ( reer cadmeed is a term used to denote somalis who were born and raised in aden) is that they are the least qabyalad somalis i ever met, they used to inter marry among each other without any barriers,of course most of them were from somaliland or puntland to lesser extent, things changed though after the doomed yemeni unification and somalia's civil war, the dixbaashi northern regime of ali saleex used to discriminate against yemenis of somali origin, i still remember when one of the northern famous politician in a tv show said publicly that when they came to aden they only found somalis and indians but no yemenis so they have to yemenise the city again.

one of the most famous cadani abwaan is mohamed murshed naji ,ALLAH YERXAMAH ,who was mowalid( father yemeni, mother somali isxaaqi) he never hided his mother was a somali who brought him with bride :

My family like yours was there for awhile four generations and even intermarried with their women. My g grandmother was a Yemeni but I don't think she was a native adeni.

Haven't heard of qalooca if true then Somalis must have had some real influence on these dhega cas.

Yes I think they call neighbourhood muxaafad or some shit like that.

When the British came and made Aden from a dusty fishing village to an important trade center it was a mainly non arab majority town.Very multicultural but as it became prosperous Yemenis from Hadhrmawt,Lahj,Abyan and different areas started settling in Aden.

As for the Ali Abdullah saleh racist comment I think i found it on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA3yvCRNRA4
He's calling south yemenis(the enire country not just Aden) because they are a bit darker and mixed Bantus,Indonesians and Horners.Focking cunsuuri bastard he is...

My grandfather used to walk around with his mother as a child and she was extremely white while my grandfather was dark in skintone and people use to point and stare.Yemenis are tad racist so I'm proud that guy never hided his Isaaq mother!

Looking at Yemeni people customs, it is like an extension of our culture. They are the most pure Arabs and we specially Rer Sh. Isxaaq have long lived and traded with Yemeni' Southern coast most notably Adan

Siciid, I would say only southern/mahri/hadrawi yemenis share culture with Somalis due to close proximity and trade for centuries. The northern midgets from Sana'a, Ta'izz and Ibb have nothing to do with us.

Did you know that there are still Somalis living in Southern Yemen/Oman till this day?

Why do people keep, saying this? I studied a little of bjt history of yemen a few years ago, and I know that just like most people in the middle east, they only became Arab 1300 years ago. They spoke a language call Sabean or Himyarite. I think they are the birthp place of Semitic languages not Arabic.
This is their native script, looks like an alien language :o

Before they became Arabised, they were an extension of the Habeshas. I actually I think the Habeshas were a yemeni colony. Yemeni have become arabised like most people in the middle east, so traces of the original yemeni native culture can only be found in Eritrea and Ethiopia. Geez is the closest thing to their true mother tongue. If Yemeni people wanted to go back to their roots, theyll have to learn Geez since theres not much surviving native languahes in Yemen. Only in Oman.
