Salam Ina Abti: There are many successful Somalis with Masters and Doctorate degrees. Yet they don't publicize their achievements to the wider community and just do their thing. I can count off dozen or more HAGists that I know who have advanced degrees ranging from aviation to botany to petroleum engineering to computer programming. However, we don't publicize our achievements in the media. Perhaps it is our humble Southern roots or fear of the evil eye, but attention is the last thing we seek.

I was very fortunate enough to have received the mentorship of a Fulbright scholar who arrived here in the 80s. He gave me the most important advice to succeed in this western 'dog' eat 'dog' world: education, networking and paying it forward. Building up this network is even more valuable than the degree. Out of University, I got my first job based on a recommendation from a faculty member. The next one was through a former client. I also paid it forward and mentor a core of HAG youth but only a select few who have shown that they are determined, self motivating and hard working.

The way I see it is that these youth are Qaaran paying kinsfolk. Their successes will help me and tolka in general going forward. Call it learning it from my Reer Ayeeyo whose nepotism saw no limits as they took the vast majority of scholarships in the government allocated scholarships while my Bozo Adeer Caadow failed to even help his own nephews.
