Significant' casualities in Eritrea and Ethiopia border battle

Arch-rivals Ethiopia and Eritrea traded blame Monday for a border battle in which "significant" casualties were reported, one of the worst clashes since the end of a 1998-2000 border war.

"There were significant casualties on both sides, but more on the Eritrean side," Ethiopian government spokesman Getachew Reda told AFP.

He said the battle that began Sunday was one of the most serious in recent years, noting that while the two sides had exchanged gun fire in the past, this clash was on a far larger scale. The fighting had reportedly calmed on Monday.

"We used to take precautionary measures against this regime, but this time was much more important in terms of magnitude than the measures that were taken so far," Getachew added.

Both sides blamed the other.

Ethiopia on Sunday "unleashed an attack against Eritrea on the Tsorona Central Front," Eritrea's ministry of information said in a statement.

Getachew instead claimed the fighting started when Eritrean artillery fired shells across the border.

"Eritrean forces started shelling our positions, including civilian ambulances, and we responded," said Getachew, who had initially claimed no knowledge of the fighting.

Eritrea won independence from Ethiopia in 1991 after three decades of war, but returned to battle in 1998-2000.

The two remain bitter enemies, with their troops still eyeing each other along the fortified frontier. Tensions are never far from the surface.

"The purpose and ramifications of this attack are not clear," Eritrea said, adding it "will issue further statements on the unfolding situation."

Eritrea and Ethiopia have long traded accusations of attacks and of backing rebels to needle each other.

In March 2012, Ethiopia attacked an Eritrean military base, accusing the country of supporting "terrorist activities" on its territory.

In February, Ethiopia accused Eritrea of being behind anti-government protests in the Oromia region last year which led to a violent clampdown by the government in Addis Ababa.

The two countries remain at odds over the flashpoint town of Badme, awarded to Eritrea by a United Nations-backed boundary commission but still controlled by Ethiopia.

It was not immediately possible to verify independently the scale of the clashes and exact reason they started.

Eritrea's media is ranked below North Korea as worst in the world for press freedom by Reporters Without Borders.

However, opposition Eritrean websites, run from abroad but with contacts inside the country, reported there were clashes along the border.

"Each side appears to be calling up reinforcement," Awate.com website reported.

The Asmarino website carried a statement from opposition campaigners appealing for calm.

"The prospect of another war is inconceivable," the statement read.

Thousands of Eritreans risk their lives to flee the hardline regime every month according to the UN, fleeing across the border into Sudan and Ethiopia despite a shoot-to-kill policy along the frontier.

Those who escape describe crawling under razor wire, tiptoeing across minefields or sneaking past armed border guards in their bid for freedom.

Last week the United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) on human rights said the government of President Isaias Afwerki, in power since 1991, was guilty of systematic enslavement, forcible conscription and other abuses.

Eritrea rejected the findings as "laughable."

Both countries have shitty government, but Eritrea is a hundred times worse. No one wins if Eritrea and Ethiopia fights, only poor Ethiopian and Eritrean people will lose. We Somalis wish only bad for others because of an inferiority complex,,this is why we are one of the most despised people in Africa. We just want everyone else to fail, because we failed. Stop wishing bad for others, especially during Ramadan.

^he's looking at it from a strategic perspective. Ethiopia pretty much colonises parts of Somalia. Having them engaged in a long, arduous, messy battle in Eritrea could benefit Somalia.

Although from a human perspective we shouldn't want war since many poor Eritreans and Ethiopians will perish.

Nothing will come of these skirmishes, its just more chest beating from both governments. The international communty recognises Eritrean soveriegnty, even if the government is enslaving their people and promoting instability in the region. If Ethiopia invaded eritrea and annex parts of their region, they will be forced to give it back just like in the 2000 war. Unless regional leaders from eritrea, call for the Ethiopian government to annex their regions just like in Crimea, Ethiopia has no right to Eritrean territories. But I suspect the marginalised ethnic groups like the Afars and the Kunamas, will eventually align themselves with ethiopia and there will be a war for atleast the Afar territories since they are currently being massacred and targetted by the Tigrinya dominant government in Eritrea,. They are being forced off their lands and Tigrinyas and tigre people are settling in Afar territories, whilst their brothers in Ethiopia are being treated reasonably well by the Ethiopian government. The next war will be for the Afar. And Eritrean afars only, unified with Eritrea because of the promise of Asseb, if Asseb isnt being used, than Afars have no reason to be with Eritrea, and they would rather make a deal with Ethiopia. And this is why they are being targetted since the eritrean government knows that they arent loyal to the regime, and their lands are incrediby strategic.

What rationale is there for Ethiopia to wage war? Ethiopia knows that even if they successfully invaded Eritrea, theyd have to give back all the lands they gained because annexing a region without securing a mandate from the native population is illegal unless youre a Jew or youve got nukes. And Eritrea is already destroying itself with Afewerki. Why would Ethiopia want to unifiy a divided people by declaring war? There is no gain for Ethiopia, unless a regional leader from the Afar or some some ethnic group pledges their allegiance to the Ethiopian states and ask to them to be liberated from Shabia in Eritrea. Ethiopia is smart enough to play the waiting game. Let them destroy themselves, then Ethiopia after 20 years of average economic growth, they will present themselves as the big brother, Father Ethiopia who always forgives. Its why the government is so generous to Eritrean refugees, heck theres Eritrean starting businesses in Adis. Ethiopia has realised that pperception is more powerful than a gun. Its why Afar people are being treated well in Ethiopia, because the government knows that these Afar people will talk to their cousins in Eritrea, about how life is better in Ethiopia and this eventually goes to the leadership of the Afar Eritrea who are Shabia shill and they will be pressured by their population to join Ethiopia and reopen Asseb.

Ethiopia is the spoiled darling of the west, military aid has been pouring in to supposedly police the horn on behalf of the west. They have been engaged in military aggression on all fronts and the west give them a diplomatic blanket to commit crimes and war of aggression and cry terrorism. If the west abandoned Ethiopia the tigre regime will collapse within months.

And Somalia were always the puppet of the Arab world, since Islam has existed in Somalia, Somalis have benefitted from beimg aligned with Arab and islamic powers like the Ottomans, the Egyptians, and now tje Saudis. Why do you detest Ethiopia for doing the same?. Is it my fault that Ethiopia plays the dipomacy game well? I dont agree with Ethiopian policies, like most Ethiopian, but do still support the Ethiopian state. Id much rather live in a oppressive country that atleast has semblance of order and perhaps even a better future prospects, than a country like Somalia(with the exception of my beautiful Somaliland) where theres anarchy, chaos and death. Somalia should stop blaming Ethiopia for their leader ineptitude and corruption, learn from the mighty Somaliland people, and perhaps Somalis would stop being bitter bitches with inferiority complexes. Somalis destroyed Somalia, it was somalis who picked up the gun and killed their own people. Somalis are their own worse enemy.
