Self declared religious courts in Mogadishu who have been flexing muscles in the past few weeks took their conquest to a new territory, threatening the mainstream media, especially, well established HornAfrik. In a letter published on HornAfrik site www.hornafrik.com, the Islamic courts accuse the TV station of defending Mogadishu cinemas and promoting safe sex practices.

Mogadishu tribal Islamic courts that were mostly passive in the past started to enforce their version of Islamic Sharia in parts of Mogadishu. They banned cinemas and sports cafés, and raided anyone in their territory who did not obey orders.

There was a major confrontation last week in which many lost their lives after militia loyal to these courts tried to raid a cinema guarded by well armed men.

The courts have been very active since Abdulahi Yusuf, their arch enemy and the current interim president moved to Jowhar about 90KM northeast of the capital earlier this year. They want to consolidate as much power as possible to counter balance Mr. Yusuf and his interim government.

If they had their way to establish Taliban style regime in Somalia, the public would not be allowed watch TV, listen to music or even walk the street with the opposite sex. And of course there would be no free media.

Threatening or attacking HornAfrik can backfire as the TV station may start to scrutinize the courts.
