I'm about to enter one, or I should say I was forced into one by the females of the family.
Never been in one, so I'm still not 100% about it even tho I have been thrown in!
How trusted is it?
When is best to collect?

It can be good and bad. It is a great idea for folks who never seem to be able to save money. With the right people,it can be good thing. Did it once and it went alright. But i generally have no problem saving a little on my own.

Tuushi, how do you save?

Hagbad is a phenomenon that is really interesting. It is an institution that still stands in the somali community; trust ; when all other institutions have collapsed.

I have read some literature on this phenomenon and it is very common around the world. It generally has a gender perspective to it. In Somalia in the old days it was women who engaged in it. The few cents saved on masaruuf went to Hagbad/ayuuto/Sholongo. But today it is the prime saving schemes for somalis.

Hagbad works in societies where there is no inflation and interest rates are low. I know that some will argue that one of the reasons of engaging in this scheme is because you avoid interest rates/ borrow money/make savings etc. But that is nonsense (see the "similar threads" below).

P.s. a few years ago, if a man engaged in Hagbad/Ayuuto/Sholongo, he would have been called Qorqod and confined to the hall of shame.

A savings account?

mmm. Try to put some money in mutual funds/stocks (there are ethical funds)

You can spread your portfolio; 50% in mutual funds and 30% in shares and 20% in savings.

I lost a lot of money due to Brexit but still in the green.

Interest rare (if that is what you mean by Riba- which is usury) is a companion of all people living under the capitalist system. It is the engine that is propelling capitalist economies.

If you are a nomad in Africa and minding your waxaro, ido, geel or lo' then you are riba free.

Every other talk of "Riba" free is pure nonsense and sheeko caruureed (see the debate in the similar thread).

Do not become a victim of the " sheeko baaraley" nonsense uttered by the hypocrites .

We are surrounded by "riba" . Everything you do, everywhere you go and everyone you meet in the west is walking riba . It is what economic system is about.

Do not buy the nonsense about interest free, islamic banking and other Xalaal nonsenses that attempts to extort money.

To MoAwr, it is better to know how the manager of that hagbad deals with people. Recently, it was time for my wife to get her turn, and this woman who manages their hagbad called her in the morning she was supposed to pick it up. She told my wife she isn't getting it, because one of the Somali guys who supposed to get it last had his truck broken, and she is gonna give it to him.

No agreements written. The person who is managing it can do anything.

I also know this other woman who used to manage this hagbad with many people. They were putting down $1000 every month and there were 35 people. Suddenly, she got missing after she pick up 35k. We did qaadhaan to cover that up.

Nevertheless, hagbad is the ingenuity of Somali women that helped many Somalis. The people who build houses back home are mostly women and the money is saved through hagbad. Majority of young men who save money did ir through a woman in their family that is in hagbad.

Just check the person who is managing it, and you should be good.
