I want To fill application for some friends and family individually , I know the basic requirements such as having Secondary Certificate and 2/5 work experience, No criminal background etc. my question is , is it oki if i put Somalia as their country of residency ? Or should I make them refugees currently living in Ethiopia Djibouti or Kenya ?

I need your help especially those of you who went To the US through this lottery or know a lot about its procedure . Thank you in advance .

The country of residence does not matter. What counts is the country of birth. But once they are selected, their application will be processed in the country where they currently reside. So if they are in Europe but you say they are in Ethio/DJ/Ken, then their application will be sent there. Currently, Somalia does not have a US embassy, so the processing will go to Nairobi, Kenya.

It don't matter whether you're refugee or the king of the country, every gets the same equal shot at being selected. The chances of winning depends on how many people applied.

It will start in first week of October as usual. I believe this will be the last year for DV lottery.

I know of two people one of whom is my cousin that came to America by way of the Diversity Lottery. He lived in Egypt and applied via what was allotted to Djibouti since he declared he was a Djiboutian.

Personally, I believe they would have better chance declaring themselves as Djiboutians assuming they can get Djiboutian laissez-passer, passport or any other document as proof of residency in the said country. They would also have to show that they, at minimum, have a high school degree and have worked in the last 2 out of 5 years.

It is also worth noting that an American address/phone/name/income qualification is required lest the lottery winner becomes ward of the State.

Oh yeah sister Aisha. When you're in the tahriib business, you sure know the geography a lot.

I took a plane from Kenya to Cuba. I took a boat from Cuba to Belize. I took a mukhalas (migration guide) that helped me and 3 other Somalis cross the Belize Border to Mexico. The travel through Mexico was the most difficult one. You had the Mexican military having many checkpoints along the road, checking narcotics. Eventually, we reached Tijuana, Mexico after about a week on the road. We had to go town by town and avoid the one long travel through Mexico. This is how we were informed from Belize. We were pretending to be tourists.
