Post by xiimaaya »

So guys I have come to notice a lot Somali men are leaving in droves to India to get some IT degrees. Mostly trick drivers and taxi drivers are Fed up with low skilled jobs and are taking advantage of India high IT education and its Cheap acomodatio. My cousin just left a year ago he's getting he's working on his certifcate .

It pays a lot $$$$ here in U.S..

Good idea. Although I would suggest computer science/engineering degrees. There are a lot of Somali going Malaysia as well.

Not sure this is good idea. Foremost here in Canada where foreign credentials are not viewed in favorable light. A lot of people with foreign credentials are asked to "Canadanize" the education by taking more courses in Canada.

Why can't they just take these programs in the West? There are a lot of accredited schools that charge low fees specially the upstart ones.

I suppose the good news is Somalis are seeing the benefit of education.

Ballshit. In the IT world, there is no need for degree at all. Period. It is all about what you can do. Having industry-recongnized certs can help but it all comes down how you perform in the practical tests. Almost all IT professional jobs require real written, oral, and hands-on tests.
And trust me, you are getting a really a good deal from an expert!

As for the thread, I think that is a very good idea but if you are really serious in acquiring a good career in IT, you can do it your own. There are many good websites with live instructors that are very good. In my company, we are focking struggling filling up IT positions and that is very common in the industry these days.

Not at all. I know a Somali guy who got a four year Computer Science from Pakistan and just in two months got 75,000/year job. I don't know about Europe and Canada, but in the U.S.A it will definitely get you a job, provided that you speak and write English well.

It helped the guy left the U.S to study abroad

Putting a four-year computer science degree in your resume helps but it will all come down to the real tests. Like I said, no IT director hires anyone these days without hands-on and practical tests. Does that make sense to you?

having a certification means that you are capable of being trained ,
its a plus definitely.
I wouldnot hire anyone without a professional certification, unless it is programming
then i would look at experience and skill level.
Degrees in IT are not that iportant, i did one and i learnt nothing that i did not already know.
I think IT degrees are useless.

Do some self study, create your own labs and practice and take the first certifications,
e.g CCNA/CCNP and MCSA etc.
For the advanced one that require taking courses like VMware and CCIE india is a good bet.
I know someone that went for a CCIE training camp 2 weeks in India and payed 1/3 of what he would pay in the UAE and 1/4 of what you would pay in Europe. something like $2000 including accomodation.

Going to local Community college is probably cheaper and better education overall, most American community colleges have better computer labs and overall more budget. I have worked with brilliant Indian coders but majority can't code shit.

When it comes to IT, degree credentials matters, specially during recessions, imagine competing with 500 hundred applicant for single role.
