Somali herbal medicine

Post by Togdeer »

Somali people have been using herbal medicine for hundreds of years. Unfortunately Somali people don't write down their history, so a lot of information has been lost. Some of the the basic stuff we have at home are actually great medicine. I'm going to list down a few of the ones I know, if anyone can translate it for me that would be great.

Xulbad - English name
Xildiid - English name
Qasil - English name

Frankensence - Somali name
Myrrh - Somali name

I think qasil is just mud-mask.

Not sure what xulbad or xildiid are. Never seen it. Explain to me.

Frankincense dhidin or luban.

Myrrh is foox.

Xildiid was nice. I developed a taste for it when I was a kid. It's from unique leaves grown on Somali soil.

Malmal is tree sap and it's poured on wounds when it's super hot but dries fast and it's also used for swellings.

Xulbad is that dacar qaraar shit. Absolutely disgusting and smells like shit

Qasil is the green thing that women put on their face

Frankiscence is uunsi and myrrh is foox

Guys, do you know the english word for 'Hohob'? It's like a red berry with a stone in it found in the mini. It has a very tangy taste.

Aishah

Blood is one of those Abgaals that talk funny. They have a nickname that I can't recall.

They don't even speak Somali. Do you expect them to know the difference between uunsi (btw that term is popular in northern regions) and frankincenses?

Frankincenses is a resin from two species of the boswellia tree, which is only found in the north.

It doesn't even grow in the south. It is mostly in the Bari (PL), Sanaag, Sahil regions--in high elevation/mountainous areas.

Image

The tree has many names including dhidin, Maydhi, lubaan etc.

Foox grows wild in Hawd and the Ogaden.

I used to cut foox all the time.

Do you know what's amazing about foox or myrrh?

You can chop a branch and stick it in the grouoand that branch will regrow there. It does this by releasing sap which is where you get the resins and it just sticks to the ground and grows new roots. This tree doesn't die. Reer miyi use it for fencing. They just cut few branches and 4 months later it's full tree.

Uunsi is made from perfume mixes, sugars and few nutty looking seeds. No idea what they are called. My eedo makes em. I seen her cook. The sugar glues them together and gives them both that solid and shine look.

The frankincense burner, idiin/dabqaad, is mined in Ceelbuur.

You got it.

Waxaa lay sheegey Maalmaal in ilmaha la isaga rido. True or false. Ragana sheeko kale ayuu ku sameeyaa, ma sheegi karo out loud. Lets just say Adali ayaa u baahan. It might help with his game.
