Rice consumes a heck of a lot of water. It's just not sustainable in a semi arid region like the Somali peninsula.

Where it is supported, and water is available, rice does well in Somalia. This was a 1982 feasibility study for an additional mill:

I know that studies were done in the 1960's at the Agraria in Jilib for both paddy and dry-land varieties.

That is not new, in fact since 2010 and ministry of agriculture is trying to plant rice localy since this commodity is the most imported commodity to SL,i remember even the army participated in this national project as they were the biggest beneficiary if it succeeded .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9qiV8AW0HU

burco started the attempt in 2011

http://saraarnews.com/?p=5531

and they succeeded and the first crop harvested were presented at the madaxtooyada

I dont know whether they started producing it commercially or not...i dont even know who is the minster of beeraha anymore with that fast and continuous reshuffle.

Mashallah. Good attempt but will it work?

Rice needs huge water sources, irrigation, milling machine, it atracts the birds so it's very very hard job and needs alot of stuff

Many kinds of rices don't work for the somali environment. In the old days, the chinese have planted it in jowhar and changed it many times with a new irrigation and plantation until they discovered the one that works for wich is one of the lowland rices-plain-

Jowhar has started planting the same one now

This govt is shyt but there was a SNA plan of puying rice from the local farmers.

Many hiiraan diaspora business men r planning to invest in rice. I'm hearing they will start it in two years.

Tropical rice works better for hiiraan...it just needs water reservation for a good irrigation iyo "caro gedis"

Most classifications of rice environments are based on altitude (upland vs. lowland) and water source (irrigated or rainfed).

Worldwide, about 80 million hectares of irrigated lowland rice provide 75% of the world’s rice production. These systems remain the most important rice production systems for food security, particularly in Asian countries. Irrigated rice is grown in bunded fields or paddies, which are surrounded by a small embankment that keeps the water in. Water supply is more assured and one or more crops a year can be grown. Farmers generally try to maintain 5–10 centimeters (cm) of water (‘floodwater’) on the field. By and large, irrigated rice farms are small, with the majority in the 0.5 to 2 hectare range. In many humid tropical and subtropical areas, irrigated rice is grown continuously with two or even three crops a year. This practice of gro

Lol topic is about rice and I'm sharing information why r you getting bothered about jowhar? I put jowhar as example for us all. Any seeds can grow up but the problem is harvesting them

Since there is higher elevation in the north some rices suites better to the much colder sanaag region

Good results.

Some of you should educate yourselves a little.

The Haud, Nugaal, Togdheer have some of the highest soil fertilities in the region.

The Oodweyne plains have also one of the largest underground aquifers.

So there is plenty of water but the method of accessing and cost may differ.

I'm not a fan of growing rice. He needs to plant teff.
