Londoners, kindly share your thoughts!

Post by Navy9 »

I do not live in UK, so I am looking for a general idea about the living standards in terms of housing (renting a flat), transportation, cost of food...etc around Cambridge/Huntingdon areas. How much salary should one make to have a comfortable life? Is the housing expensive? Did Brexit influence the rental market? Is the transportation system dependable? is the gas expensive?

Anything you can share is very much appreciated and thanks in advance.

This is even better as it breaks down everything from food to housing In the area you asked.

I had been there once on a vacation and was surprised at their home utilities in where I stayed with relatives. It seemed like third world country to be honest. The food was good and we went to both Somali and Indian restaurants. My be Cambridge area you want is better. I have traveled on the train extensively to see people I wanted to see and didn't spend too much time roaming the city. It looked backward compared to Belgium, Netherlands and Sweden.

Agent,

Don't assume all Somalis have the same level of income. Some of us in the US make good money because of their education and skill level. I think Navy can afford perhaps since she asked for that specific area. She could be over-educated for us skinnies, you never know bro.

Since you brought up clan, I think she can sponsor you and your clan and cover your costs.

WCS,

The clan bit was a joke bro, given how the ins and outs of this place revolves around it.

Btw, didnt realize Navy was a lass, my bad. Would have made an effort with a decent post.

All I know is that the entire Cambridgeshire and its surroundings are somewhat off limits to us skinnies, over-educated/well-off or otherwise.

And didn't you get the memo, lool. My folks perfected the art of modern Tahriib. So thanks, we are good on that front!

Cambridge is cheap and so is pretty much every city outside of London, the only reason why so many somalis live in London is because they have contracts with the council or long term private rental contracts, the rest of the people you see in london get housing benefits because they can't afford to pay rent on their own. Do not move to london if you are working person.

London is amazing city second to none, the weather is shit though.

Cambridge is alright. Calm, clean, student-focused but as someone mentioned "posh" or upper mid to middle class area. Not too many coloured faces except a little in central/shopping/student areas. As for rent, it depends what type of housing you want; shared accomodation, apartment or house?. If you intend to stay for a short while, family or friends house-sharing could work or depending on your salary. The pound post-Brexit is weaker but not too noticeable as of yet, so expecting worse to come with higher inflation and virtually no pay rise. :|

London is the UK they say, but it is not the best place to live as far as quality of life goes.
