Explaining Somali words/terms thread..

Post by Estranged »

Assalamu alaikum..

So this thread is for posting words/terms you don't know in Somali so others can explain it. I feel like I'm the only one that's going to be using it cos y'all are really good with Somali maa shaa Allah.

So..

What do these words mean?

• Waxsi
• Langaab
• Eeley
• Cuqdad

1. i believe you're referring to wahsi, which could mean laziness and/or fatigue

2. somalis use the term laangaab to mean someone from a minority clan but literally it means a clan with a short lineage, i.e. short number of ancestors from its progenitor

3. eelay are a digil and mirifle clan

4. cuqdad basically means predetermined hate, clan prejudice in our case

I can't imagine an adult Somali not knowing what langab or cuqdad mean. Perhaps you grew up in a non- Somali household, but these are very common words. Wax sii = give something/handout. Eelay, new to me as well.

No I grew up in a Somali household.. in the West. So my Somali is quite lacking. Not just that, I don't know much about Somali tribes and the different regions (nvm the politics) except what I searched/taught myself. :/

I meant wahsi like the other user mentioned. :)

Start with your clan, work your way out. That is what I did. Also, participate in FKD sessions Snet version of accelerated studies. In no time you will be graduate senior FKD'er, lol. Anyway, what would you wanna know about clans?

I can link you some resources on Somali culture and language if you want.

Idk, the different clans and their sub clans and the regions they occupy etc. Just a really good overview on these things so I'm not lost when people discuss/mention it. :?

What's FDK? And don't worry I'm not like that.

Do you have resources on the tribes and their relations and history? :lupe:
