Is insanity another form of ingenuity?

Post by Thanatophiliac »

Serious question. I've looked up countless contradictory terminologies in relation to ingenuity. This led me to the assumption that there never was an officially recognised or standardised legal definition, be it contemporary or otherwise. Everything I've found was there and here and in between.

Quite a few scientists have alluded to the thin line between insanity and ingenuity and that insanity is nothing other than the 'greatest manifestation of a true genius'.

A look into some of the people who were known to be clinically insane, but we're nonetheless classified as geniuses amongst many:

1. Pythagoras, the Mathematician
2. Socrates, the Philosopher
3. Michaelangelo, Painter
4. Empedocles, Scientist.

Amongst the Muslims:
1. Zamakhshari, the Mu'tazilite philosopher.
2. Jahiz, the African Muslim, Author of the 'Book of Animals'.
3. Jahm Ibn Safwan, the founder of the Jahmites.

I've purposely abridged the examples for fear of elongation.

I'm inclined to believe that the insane have reached the Nirvana of ingenuity. They have broken all barriers. Set a new precedent. Shunned all prejudices and have moved on.
Is this valid?

They are savants. They begin a new norm, from their unique abnormality!

I believe it is.

Feel the silence between your breaths.
Your heart beating in your chest.
Constant as the reactor beneath.
Giving light.
Heat.
Time.

We,
the last unbroken remnants,
vow to undo the errors of our ascendants,
to make the Earth whole,
the lost unlost,
at peril of our own birth.

Like rings of fire so interconnected
That they are almost indistinguishable from each-other,
They burn fiercely, fuelling from each-other's pain and suffering,
Ash and smoke dance, they swirl and circle around,
As though part of a wicked yet intriguing ritual.
You find yourself an observer to this.
You are bewildered and enchanted, overwhelmed with angst.
You feel the warmth on your clammy skin,
Your heart beats so immensely fast
You feel your chest rocking your body.
Your head spins as your eyes well up.
Each shooting ray of light glimmers a thousand times in your eyes.
From the outside you seem calm and defiant
But inside you are consumed by fear and confusion.
Overcome by it all, petrified, you stand there, awaiting the impact.
