Same masjid has been targeted in the past year
QUEBEC—At least two prominent politicians have blasted whoever left a pig’s head outside a mosque in Quebec City over the weekend.

Premier Philippe Couillard described it as a “despicable” act, while Mayor Regis Labeaume called the perpetrator a “cretin.”

“We want to live in peace, we want to live in harmony,” Couillard said in Montreal on Monday. “Everybody’s entitled to follow their own convictions and their own religion.

“It speaks unfortunately of the hatred and the intolerance that exist in our society. Fortunately, it’s a small minority of people, I’m sure, but it’s something that should be condemned very very strongly ... It’s despicable.”

Labeaume said Muslims are “Quebec citizens. They are a part of us, of our community.”

The animal’s head was left outside an Islamic cultural centre that is home to a mosque.

According to photos published on Facebook by the cultural centre, the head was wrapped in transparent plastic tied with blue and white ribbons, with a note reading, “Bonne appetit (sic).”

Many Muslims don’t eat pork due to their religious beliefs.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred in the middle of Ramadan, when some Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

Ottawa, Ontario
January 29, 2017
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement today after hearing of the fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec located in the Ste-Foy neighbourhood of the city of Québec:

“It was with tremendous shock, sadness and anger that I heard of this evening’s tragic and fatal shooting at the Centre culturel islamique de Québec located in the Ste-Foy neighbourhood of the city of Québec.

We condemn this terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of all those who have died, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured.

“While authorities are still investigating and details continue to be confirmed, it is heart-wrenching to see such senseless violence. Diversity is our strength, and religious tolerance is a value that we, as Canadians, hold dear.

“Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country. Canadian law enforcement agencies will protect the rights of all Canadians, and will make every effort to apprehend the perpetrators of this act and all acts of intolerance.

“Tonight, we grieve with the people of Ste-Foy and all Canadians.”

Re: 6 dead, 8 wounded in Quebec City mosque shooting

Quebec provincial police say six people are dead and eight were wounded after shots were fired inside a mosque on Sunday night during evening prayers.

Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Christine Coulombe says the victims range in age from 35 to 70. Some of the wounded are considered to be in critical condition.

Thirty-nine people escaped the Islamic cultural centre of Quebec in the Sainte-Foy neighbourhood without injuries, according to Coulombe.

Perimeters and road blocks have been erected in other areas of Quebec City by police as part of their investigation.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said it was obvious that the shooting should be treated as an act of terrorism.

"It's a murderous act directed at a specific community," he said at a press conference just after 1:30 a.m.

"I think the majority of citizens, not just in Quebec but elsewhere, would describe it that way."

Earlier Couillard said that "Quebec categorically rejects this barbaric violence" and offered solidarity with the families of the victims.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the shooting, which he described as a "terrorist attack on Muslims in a centre of worship and refuge," in a statement.

"Muslim-Canadians are an important part of our national fabric, and these senseless acts have no place in our communities, cities and country," said Trudeau.

Attack on the ground floor

Quebec City Police Const. Étienne Doyon said mostly men were gathered inside the mosque when the shooting began just before 8 p.m.

At the moment of the attack, the men were praying on the ground floor of the building, while women and children were upstairs.

Two suspects were arrested, one of whom was apprehended after a chase that ended near l'île d'Orléans. Police are looking into the possibility the suspects attended Laval University, a source close to the investigation told Radio-Canada.

By 10:40 p.m. police said the "situation is under control."

"The building is secure and the occupants evacuated. The investigation continues," Quebec City Police tweeted.

Quebec City Police said they are working with the RCMP and the provincial police.

'A Québécois accent'

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told CBC's French-language service Radio-Canada that two masked individuals entered the mosque.

"It seemed to me that they had a Québécois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot they yelled, 'Allahu akbar!' The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head," said the witness.

"There were even kids. There was even a three-year-old who was with his father."

'We love you': calls for solidarity with Muslims

Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume fought back tears, saying the city is in mourning.

"To the Muslim community, our neighbours, our co-citizens, who count on our support and solidarity, I want to say, 'we love you,'" said Labeaume.

Couillard also wanted to share a message of solidarity with Quebec's Muslim community.

"We are with you. You are at home. And you are welcome at home," he said.

Politicians across Canada and the world have also joined in to tweet their support for the mosque, while denouncing the act.

"Horrified at the news of a shooting in a mosque tonight in Québec City. We stand with our Muslim neighbours against this act of hatred," NDP leader Tom Mulcair tweeted.

The administration of the mosque thanked citizens for their outpouring of support on their Facebook page late in the evening.

"Thank you for the hundreds of compassionate messages coming from everywhere," the mosque wrote.

Vigils have been planned for the coming days across the province.

Security increased around mosques

Quebec Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux said that places of worship across the province have been placed under surveillance, with police in Quebec City deployed around close to a dozen places of worship.

Both Montreal and Gatineau, Que., said they will be increasing security and surveillance in the wake of the shooting.

Gatineau Police said they will pay "particular attention to the surroundings of mosques."

The incident comes at the end of a weekend in which an untold number were detained at U.S. airports, and thousands of others protested across North America, as a result of a temporary travel and refugee ban concerning seven Muslim-majority nations which new U.S. president Donald Trump signed off on in an executive order.

The Islamic cultural centre of Quebec, meanwhile, has been the target of vandals in the past.

Last June, during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a pig's head was left on the doorstep of the mosque.

Authorities are asking anyone with information into Sunday's attack to contact Quebec provincial police at 1-800-659-4264.

Oh boy looks like another Muslim on Muslim attack. Witnesses claim the men shouted out allahu Akbar before shooting.

Now it is coming out that one of them was Moroccan.

If it turns out to be right, every western nation must adopt trump's policy
