HSM; the man who tried to restore our dignity

Sidee la yahay?
Four years ago, I wrote this;

And I was almost laughed at.
Well, well, here we are again. Euphoria, all smiles, hopes and celebrations.
It is the same bad comedy once again. A new wine in an old bottle. The same actors, the same celebrations. Every four years, we do this.
Hope and change maybe but the underlying fact is our addiction to things with no substance.
The new president “selected” by warlords, tribal thugs, zealots and welfare cheats from the west has a lot to accomplish. His selection has brought hope. His selection has been celebrated all over Somali lands.
We are humans. We forget easily.
It was the same thing four years ago; a newcomer. We celebrated, we rejoiced and hoped that he will bring changes. (see the reaction to my piece)
HSM selection that is..
He traveled the world. it all hope, carab dhow, parties to welcome a new dawn.
However, as with everything Somali, we condemned him after a few months- and his political capital faded away.
Will it be different this time? Possibly not; probably not. He will be like the others before him. Once the honeymoon ends, he will get a new nickname, and people will be calling for his head.
Let us hope that I am proved wrong.
I am not here to praise HSM but to mention some of his achievements.
HSM was working with peace building, an NGO man. An academic who came out of the blues and won against “Shariif Dhoof” who a few years earlier was the darling of the “masses”.
He brought hope, was always smiling and some people say (Trump) brought the somali name out of the qashin qub.
Did he make mistakes? Yes he did. He bowed to the madax koraankor (and not for Somalis), he was corrupt (who is not?) etc
But his mistakes should be put in the context of our nation. We are a nation that has lost its moral compass, we are a people of Af waa ko may liki aamee?
More importantly, we are poor. Very poor. Moral poverty and material poverty.
HSM- during his tenure has succeeded in peace building and much more.
His major failure was the creation of LALALANDS, the fiefdoms, the Balluchistans, etc.
Somalis have profound hate for Kenya and Ethiopia. He travelled to these countries and engaged in a kiss of death. Will
Farmaajo avoid this bromance? If he does, he will succeed. If he does not it is game over.
But HSM has achieved a lot. A lot that is not visible to the masses
Let us wish the new president luck. He needs our well wishes and luck. Can Farmaajo reverse our fortunes and dismantle the institutionalised 4,5 system? Will he bring justice for the poor guy on the street? Will he ask madax cambuulo and the injirleeys to pack their bags? Will he dismantle the Lalalands? Will he fight endemic corruption?
Or will he be just another “big man” of Africa?
Time will tell.
In the meantime, let us appreciate HSM’s achievements (many of them tacit) and his humble exit.
We shall remember you for your smiles, for your hopeful message and for bringing a sense of dignity to our people (diplomatic).
And see you in four years when we shall watch a rerun of this scary movie.
