Re: Assajog Hanolatoo- Ali-Sabieh Water Project
They are close to finishing a huge concrete tank just outside the city of Ali-Sabieh that would hold 1,000,000 liters of fresh water daily. This water is piped from all the way from Hadhagala, Shinile Zone.
This was almost two hours long program on TV that was condensed into 30 minutes online, but I did see the concrete tank in its finishing touches and will be operational soon. People are genuinely excited about this project, planting trees and farms. Kudos to IOG.
Djibouti, Arta all get tanks some bigger, others smaller. Within Ethiopia, Ayshaca and few other towns get similar tanks just as big or smaller. Residents in Shinile Zone are now settling down, no more nomadic lifestyle. They are planting corn and sorghum while rearing their livestock -- xoolo dhaqaato beeralee, a new concept for a nomad.

Water is actually from a huge aquifer in Shinile Zone, so this is brother helping brother transaction. Ethiopian government is just a formality to facilitate the process with the Djibouti and Chinese governments.

The agreement follows a request in January last year by the Ethiopian government for parliamentary approval for the Shinile Zone of Bekuli Rift Valley area – about 100 km from the border with Djibouti.
Eventually, the water will reach Djibouti City. Salty water in Djibouti City is basically confined to the quartier and close to the guudka. Ambouli, Balbala, Barwaqo, etc., have no salt in their water table. The accord gives "full and exclusive rights" to Djibouti to draw 103, 000 metric cubes of underground water every day, a total of 37 million metric cubes annually, for the next 30 years.
