Construction begins on UAE naval base in Somaliland

Construction of a UAE naval base in Somaliland has started with the facility expected to be completed by June 2018.

Sharjah-based engineering group Divers Marine Contracting is leading the project after being awarded the $90m contract in April, Arabian Business reported.

The facility will be built near the regional port of Berbera, located on the Gulf of Aden, 260 kilometers (162 miles) south of Yemen.

The Somaliland naval base will include a 300-metre L-shaped inland berthing port with a depth of 7 metres “to support the military airport,” accommodating naval vessels to patrol the Gulf of Aden, according to Abdulla Darwish, managing director of Divers Marine Contracting.

“It’s not a commercial port. It’s only for naval vessels,” he added.

In September, Dubai-based port operator DP World announced that it will donate $2m (AED7.3m) to help Somaliland improve water availability and healthcare access in Berbera.

The donation will also cover refurbishments to the Berbera General Hospital and the Berbera Mental Hospital to ensure that residents have adequate access to medical facilities, according to DP World.

Failmaajo is booty clapping to UAE now too. That guy has no shame he tried to play hardball with UAE at first to stop Berbera deal and they laughed in his face. So he went to saudi and asked them to change UAE mind and they laughed in his face too. I think turkey told Failmaajo to do all that and Failmaajo doesn't like being embarrassed so he's getting friendly with UAE now too in hopes turkey will back off and stop demanding ridiculous things from him when it comes to going against Arab allies .

Will this naval base be strictly for UAE use? What is Somaliland getting in return? Is there some sort of defense pact between UAE and Somaliland?

To me it looks like UAE is taking steps to counter Turkey in the Somali peninsula. Rebirth of the Ottoman influence and expansion of Muslim brotherhood threaten the future of Saudi and UAE establishments. They have tried to stem the same threats in their own backyard by bullying Qatar into submission and so far have failed. UAE was planning to conduct a quick and short invasion of Qatar by using private mercenaries to remove the young Qatari emir in coup d'état. Their plan was foiled by the presence of over 1,000 Turkish Special Ops in Qatar, courtesy of Erdogan. Basically, these Gulf jokers can not fight or defend themselves. All they have are the oil/gas money and their giant barefooted egos.

I trust Turks more than Arabs. Turkey has powerful modern army, second largest in NATO. It's geographically far removed from Somalia and so far seems to act in Somalia's interests. Turkish base opened with the intention to help train the Somali Army. Most important thing is the fact that Turkey is a strong proponent of the territorial integrity of Somalia. That's in stark contrast to thieving UAE Arabs.
