Back then Kemal was nobody really. He lead the Battle of Gallipoli against Brits and French. After several attempts and huge casualties, Allied forces suffered humiliating defeat from young Turk, Mustafa Kemal. Subsequently, Kemal managed to clear Turkey from all invaders and created unified Republic of Turkey. For that he was given the title of Ataturk which translates as the Father of Turks.

The last Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed VI, and his sons fled Istanbul on board of British warship to Europe. He is the guy who gave up and chose to be beta because everything was bad and hopeless.

Do the history of the above three countries sound like today's Somalia? Yes

It is pretty remarkable considering the conditions they are subjected to. Japan's population is around 120 millions, China's 1.7 billion. Russia's 145 millions, USA's 320 millions. All of them have major economies and armies. These big boys can not squash tiny North Korea because their leader 33 year old Kim Jong Un is true alpha who never gave up. Just like his father and grandfather. Regardless how dictatorial he is, North Korea have never attacked any country. They only defended their own country. North Korea stands tall. Just food for thought.

Everyone in the world has advanced except Somalia and north Korea. I have given up hope for the country. Its a hot bed of every single thing that could go wrong anywhere in the world. Its like we're cursed. How could one even believe in God after that?
