Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 1 March 2018: Ethiopia will become a shareholder of the
Port of Berbera following the signing of an agreement with DP World and the Somaliland Port
Authority in Dubai today.
DP World will hold a 51% stake in the project, Somaliland 30% and Ethiopia the remaining
19%. The government of Ethiopia will also invest in infrastructure to develop the Berbera
Corridor as a trade gateway for the inland country, which is one of the fastest growing
countries in the world.
There are also plans to construct an additional berth at the Port of Berbera, in line with the
Berbera master plan,
which DP World has already started implementing, while adding new
equipment to further improve efficiencies and productivity. The first cranes are scheduled to
arrive later this year.
Expressing the importance of working with the governments of Somaliland and Ethiopia on the
projects which will fuel trade and employment opportunities in the region, DP World Group
Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, said: “I am so excited about the
prospects of working with the Ethiopian government. Ethiopia is home to approximately 110
million people. The ports of Berbera and Doraleh will provide significant capacity to the region.
Both these ports and more capacity will be needed to serve the region’s growth potential in the
future.
“Having the Government of Ethiopia as a partner will enable DP World to support the
Government in achieving its impressive development plans. This development and the
strengthening of our partnership demonstrates our commitment to the people of Somaliland
and Ethiopia and we look forward to working together.”
Mr. Bin Sulayem added: ”The economies of the region are growing at a pace that needs the
development of Berbera supplementing Djibouti and additional gateways in the future.”

In return they will give us Monopoly over large percentage of their huge import and export cargoes. All we we are interested is a guaranteed uninterrupted trade flows with Ethiopia. If Oromo takes office this Sunday this deal is going to be even better because there will be no more demonstrations.

the contracts stipulates 30 years soma ahan ?

That means Habasha will not only get free access to Berbera port for 30 years, but they are going to make a profit form it along with DP World who ow 55% shares.

The Jeegaan get the remainder, what stake do the people of SL have in this deal, yaab badana.

Nothing is free , , not only are the Ethiopians going to build bigger roads connecting to somaliland they will also lure their citizens to berbera port since they are shareholders. We are getting high end transportation system plus millions of new customers. This is a sad day for Zoomalia .

Zoomalia maxaa ka galay Berbera ? this is internal SL issue mate.

Berbera port already has monopoly over Ethiopian export along with Djibouti as Ethiopia does not have access to the Red sea. Basically what you lot a bragging about is under cutting Djibouti tax revenue by giving Ethiopia free access for 30 years and allowing DP world to take 55% profit.

Road construction to ports is in Ethiopia's interest, it isn't something they are doing for SL but for themselves you idiot.

It's in our interests as well. Most importantly we want "sac sac muuse " to handle the entire cargoes of Ethiopia in both Somaliland and Djibouti. We are talking about over 100 million customers. In few years time we are going to produce new billionaires. We'll come to the new Jews in the horn.

You probably don’t understand this deal because you didn’t get into gedo’s only high school but don’t worry for jeeganta Iyo asxaabta. If turkey can take Mogadishu port for free while Kenya takes somalia’s Borders why can’t the xabashis and Arabs work with jeegan.

We hope to see a second high school soon inshallah in gedo

Very bad news for Somalia and anyone whose claiming to control “the country”.

If you control it then why others signing up deals right in front of you including your arch enemy?

This deal more than anything sends message to the international community that SL is independent and ready for foreign investments.

The 19% stalk for Ethiopia is good only if Ethiopia gives at least 50% of its loads to Berbera.

The deal is designed to steal business from Djibouti and keep Somalia at bay.

Also we will contribute to Ethiopia ever expanding into Ogaden by making things easier to transport whether tanks or building materials.

Don’t forget if Ethiopia discovers oil or gas, pipeline will go to Berbera.

My main concern is can DP deliver?

Somaliland will still tax all the imported and exported good. like if you ship a car to berbera port you will still pay 1000 for tax but the shipping company pays the port charge. That's the money that will be shared not the tax. tax from the export livestock will be huge. What people don't understand is at the moment ethiopia use djbouti for 90% for imports and exports . Now they have stake in berbera that will change to berbera favour inshallah. Plus this will deal will create a big free zone where thousand of jobs will be created and road constrution. Somaliland is not politically recognised but now for sure they are economically recognised. for all the people saying somaliland get a 30%. they will make more in taxs from all export and imports. Plus it doesn't have the problem with the expense of running the port. the government can build the berbera cement now and build a port in maydh for it to run. This deal is confisence vote for the people and goverment of somaliland. the biixi administration needs to expand the hargeisa airport to up the revenve. Plus we have bargaining chip with UAE and ethiopia with future agreement. :sland:
