Brave Somalis volunteer to fight ethiopia 1978

this just increased my respect for somalis.
in 1978, as the yemeni-cuban-ethio coalition got closer to the border with somalia, siad barre put out a call to his people to fight..
and this is the result....

They all left their tanks, trucks, shoes and shorts in the Ogaden desert.

Ethiopia won a victorious war and Somalia never recovered from it to this day.

It was nothing for Ethiopia. It was just that initially it was busy fighting EPLF and TPLF in Eritrea and Tigray.

Somalia drove into an empty border but once Ethiopia moved some of its army from Tigray and Eritrea, Somalia left everything in the Ogaden desert.

As a kid growing up in eastern Ethiopia in the late 1989s-1991, I used to see all this liter across the vast land including tanks, truck tyres (huge ones), shells, bullet casings, rockets, boots not knowing there was a war over decade ago.

When I grew older I realised we chased Somalia hard never to be seen again.




Barre paid very heavy price. He was trying to free the useless Cagdheer.

Today they accepted their faith and are willing to kill their mothers in the name of “nabadiid”, “ubbo”.

I like the outcome.

In the 77 war somalia was facing three military the Ethiopians. The Cubans. The Soviets. Three against one because Somalian army pushed the Ethiopian army all the way back to adis Ababa and soviets saw that as Somalian expansion.
We somalis lost that war because of siad bare greed to expan somalia beyond its borders otherwise ogaden would be part of somalia today. There's nothing wrong with losing war when you face three army.
IN my mind the somalis of the 1977 were true heroes
