What’s next for Berbera and Somaliland?
Historical visit from Ethiopian Prime Minister mr Abiy Ahmed to visit Eritrea has become the first Ethiopian leader to do so in more than 20 years. After the meeting between the two leaders there were a few outcomes that left people baffled and scratching their heads.
1. Ethiopia will be allowed to the use the port of Assab which use to be its only port when Ethiopia and Eritrea where a unified country. So using other ports such as Djibouti, port Sudan and Berbera port would become secondary port or not even used. This Brings a big shock to the people of Somaliland after Ethiopia received a 19% share to use the port of Berbera following a 3 way deal with Somaliland, Ethiopia and UAE (DP world).
2. Prime Minister Abiy who is Oromo by name is more Amhara than Oromo, after all his mum is Ahmara as well as his wife. Mr Ahmed has this Ahmara/ abysinya agenda which is to unite the people of Abyssinia and become a world powerhouse. Since he took office relations have soured with Somaliland, who he sees as part of Somalia unlike his predecessors. He’s also trying to get rid of all tribal federal states and form much smaller counties with a strong central government.
3. President Muse Bixi has been in office for almost 9 months now. Since he has taken office he had been focused on internal affairs. He has faced huge opposition, internal war in ceelafwayne and a war with Somalia over tukuraq. The president had barely anytime to get his head round and focus on foreign affairs.
After a difficult 9 months in office what is next for president Muse Bixi and the people of Somaliland?

The problem with s/l is that they're useless at politics.
They're always behind the curve on current events.
S/l strategy for the last 30 years was to sell Berbera.
There is no plan B.

Axmed abiye is playing politics to be honest after Meles there hasn't been a leader in Ethiopia we had good understanding with. As for the berbera port we should ask the dp world guys remember dp world is investing in assab to. Dp world wants strangle djibouti . I will not be suprised if abudhabi asked axmed abiye to give badme to asmara and than make peace Remember the khaleeeji Arabs are still fighting houthis And qatar is still isolated. I think we need to.change foreign minister. Jamaal cali xuseen should become the new fm. Djibouti is going to see some losses to once Ethiopia uses assab. Because diibouti does all the port activity for Ethiopia since 2002. And we need a better foreign policy

Spot on khalid. I think the biggest losers of this deal is Djibouti. Djibouti has been handling 90% of Ethiopian import/ export for the last 15 years. They rely on Ethiopia to use its port which brings in a huge amount of income and makes a huge percentage of the GDP of the country.Khalid Ali wrote: Mon Jul 09, 2018 4:04 am Axmed abiye is playing politics to be honest after Meles there hasn't been a leader in Ethiopia we had good understanding with. But yes Somaliland definitely needs a new foreign minister and we need to improve our foreign relationships. I would have like Dr Samater or Jamal Ali Hussein as foreign ministers. Muse Bixi made a big mistake by ignoring both of them and Dr Galaydh and not giving them any positions in government.
I think Dr Samatar would be perfect foreign minister and Jamal would be the best finance minister.

Re: What’s next for Berbera and Somaliland?
Ethiopia has been very hostile in dealing with Somaliland under the new PM.
He has done a 180 degree turn on his predecessor who had good plans for Berbera. He has closed Somaliland office in Addis he does not want to deal with Somaliland directly however he wants to deal with farmajo.
We need a new plan and show Ethiopian we are not completely reliant on them. After all in politics there is no such things as permanent allies however each nation has its own motive and works closely with those who share the same interests. Right now Ethiopia and Somaliland don’t have the same interest. We should
1. Ban khat imports from Ethiopia and start using Kenya instead
2. Ban fruit and veg import from Ethiopia and grown our own instead
3. Shut down Ethiopia office in hargeisa
4. Mass deportations of all oromo from Somaliland
5. Stop Ethiopian airlines coming to hargeisa
PS Ethiopia and Eritrea have agreed to jointly develop the port of Assab
