Somali soap opera

Post by AwRastaale »

I'm loving this reer Waqooyi drama called Wacdi Iyo Waano.

I watched few clips and it makes sense.

This is what we need and Waqooyi should aim for becoming major Somali film and drama industry. It could generate decent cashflow for the region if done right and resources are invested. Universal and HCT would pay good money to carry the shows and locals would tax the revenue. The actors, directors, studios, etc, could themselves also generate decent income, which goes back to the community whether going shopping for props, renting filming sites, buying personal homes, and overall promoting social issues like this Wacdi Iyo Waano is doing.

If these tv stations will not carry or pay the right price, YouTube and social platforms can generate good income via pay per views (just needs verification and strict copyright measures).

For those not familiar, Abdi left miyi to seek job in the city (Hargeisa) in order to support his livestock rearing family.

He meets a girl (Iskufilaan) from a rich family. The father refuses to marry off his daughter to this reer miyi guy so the two lovers escape together back to miyi. At first she struggles with the elements, culture and expectations by the family and community in the outback all together. She longs for her life, her family and the city.

But eventually she learns to love miyi and her husband even more. He too grows to appreciate her more. In one episode, the two of them find themselves alone under the stars. They comfort each others and agree that they are outside from both families (miyi Iyo magaalo) and realise that their love for each others was bigger than all (jacaylkena ka weyn). He makes fire and connects with his wife for the first time showing her that she was above all for him including his own family and their needy livestock. She dedicates a song to him and likewise he sings for her. The two young lovers celebrate together the night under the bright stars declaring "aan miyiga jooge, hay gaynin Hargeysa" (don't take me to Hargeisa, let's stay in the outback). It shows a glimmer of hope that city girl is falling for the harsh outback life with her lover beside her closer than ever. See episode 19.

It's educational and carries great message. It's hailed by the Somali people and is currently one of the most Shared media on social platforms. Much of the show is filmed in the Somali outback locally known as miyi or baadiye. The show resonates well with its Somali audience.

I give this 4 stars :som: :som: :som: :som:
