Cali Kaar

Post by Voltage »

Recently Mustafee asked me to let him know if I can locate anything about Cali Kaar (Marehan/reer Garaad)

The saga of reer Garaad's move to Gedo is quite unfortunate. I notice it is always one of the most regretful things Mareexaanka Mudug, especially reer Diini, talk about.

I am not going to rehash it, but Mustafee I found this info about Cali Kaar in Shire Jaamac Axmed's literary magazine Iftiinka Aqoonta.

From the edition published January 25, 1967 (side note; the 1972 language commission literally didn't change anything in Shire Jama's script when they chose it as the official script...this magazine was published in 1967 and it is carbon copy of our script today)

Cali Kaar also relayed the famous Mareexaan war dictate;

Sanka Ceel Baxay
Iyo Sagaalo Irmaan
Gasin xeebta ka qaad
Ilaawoow xilaqooq

This followed the infamous and unfortunate reer Garaad vs. reer Diini war.

Right after that war that saw in one of the party's defeat in what is today XUJUR (most Marehan think it is Fadhi-Garaadle but this is not true as Shire Jaamac says above), reer Garaad and their leader Cali Kaar moved away and went to go live with Ogaadeen.

One day he got word the Ogaadeen were planning a massive war against the Mareexaan to uproot them from the Qoroxeey area and all the way to sea-coast where the Hawiye were living.

The reer Garaad leader was of course angry at the outcome of the war with reer Diini, but of course no man will sit and watch a plan to destroy his whole kin. Cali Kaar eloquently and masterly composed a "hal-xiraale" gabay that was meant to be carried all the way to the military commander of the Mareexaans who was Ilaawe. Ilaawe's decendents today include reer Isaaq Biixi (Col Abdirisaaq Isaaq Biixi Ilaawe who was Chairman of the SNF).

The gabay was long and cleverly hidden but this little part was the most important because it leaked the Ogaadeen plan and also told Ilaawe how to defeat them. When Ilaawe got the gabay, he wondered why reer Garaad who would obviously be mad would send a gabay to him so he listened well because his intuition told him something was not right.

It is said after he listened to the gabay 2 times, on the third try when he reached this little part his mind clicked and he said "MAREEXAAN GET YOUR HORSES READY" and, followinge the advise, he defeated the Ogaadeen.

The little part that the reer Garaad leader composed a whole gabay to hide was this part.

Sanka Ceelbaxay iyo
Sagaalo irmaan
Gasin xeebta ka qaad
Ilaawow xilaqooq

"Sanka Ceel Baxay" is code for a little watering well near Shiilaabo and "sagaalo irmaan" was code name for a little tuulo that reer Kooshin and bah-Darandoole settle today called Laasacaano. It basically meant the Ogaadeen are grouping there.

"Gasin xeebta ka qaad" meant ENGAGE THEM FROM THE WEST, NOT THE EAST. Basically attack/ambush them from the rear like how to a nomad Somali, the wave comes in from the east and recedes from the west.

It meant the current is going back out into the ocean, the Ogaadeen are only facing you so "gasin xeebta ka qaad" meant go northwest, descend down behind them and ambush them from the back because they have absolutely no protection or look out there. Basically the Ogaadeen like the ocean current going back out is only rushing out to Mareexaan and the beach, or the rear, is without protection.

"Ilaawoow xilaqooq" meant sort of like "This message is literally for you to grasp" which Cali Kaar meant by Ilaawe lead them to victory.

Interesting, my mother’s best friend is Reer Garaad Marexaan, she was telling the story of when her Great Grand father crossed the Webi region in Kilinka 5 and moved to Gedo in the mid 1800s, and it was due to a Civil War with Reer Diini. I heard her mention Laafa Garaad I think it’s in between Cabudwaaq & Shilaabo area.

Thanks Voltage. It is sad, most of our history were lost. There were another reer Garaad fellas before Cali Kaar. Heroes like Imaam Dhooweyd who defend the Xabashis from Baabile gate. He is buried in Dhangago between Jigjiga and Baabile. And there’s also Sheekh Cabdiweli Wabi Kalagoys. Ugaas Maxamed Weli kasoo jeedaa fir culimo khaasatan sheekh karaamo ku kala gooyay wabi ku yaalo Nogob aageeda. Reer Wabikalagoys ayaa ladhahaa, they live everywhere from Jigjiga to Nogob to Ceelcade to Gedo. The Sheekh used to travel a lot and had more than 30 children with different wives.

The war was between Xuseen Yusuf, Cali Dheere vs reer Garaad and Yusuf Maxamed Daud. Reer Garaad became natural leaders of Mareexaan after Boqor Maxamed Daud was killed. By then Ugaas Sharmarke was born and became the Ugaas of Xuseen Yusuf. Ugaas Sharmarke was powerful that he want to lead the Sade clan and not just section of Radamir. Most Sade clans agreed that Sade will have Ugaas and not Garaad. Only reer Garaad and Yusuf Maxamed rejected and said reer Garaad will always be the hogaan of Sade. Then war took place between Ceeldibir, Lasacaanood and Fadhigaraadle area. Then reer Garaad and reer Yusuf were defeated. They went far west to Beled Ogaden. After living with the Ogaden for decades. Then one day, Reer Axmed killed Ogaden sultan. Ogaden said they will attack the Mareexaan in Fadhigaraadle area while they are sleeping and get revenge. But the Ogaden didn’t release that reer Garaad and reer Yusuf Maxamed were Mareexaan and live with them. They thought those clans were officially magan Ogaden or atleast joined Ogaden. Cali Kaar couldn’t sleep and sent message to Mareexaan in the East, ironically the same ones that kicked his people from their deegaans. When Ogadens went there to attack, the Mareexaans were already ready with their horses. A section of reer Garaad and reer Yusuf Maxamed still live Qabridahare area. The mayor of Qabridahare is reer Yusuf

Wallahi sometimes they are. One of the things that most annoys me about "two people" here is they remind me of everything I dislike about our sub-clan's history.

It was unfortunate. I think by Lafa Garaad she meant Fadhi Garaadle which is where Marehan oral history says is where it happened

Also notice right above it is Laasacaano that I mentioned previously

Lol, according to my dad, as far as he is concerned Maxamed Weli is the only Ugaas of Mareexaan since the death of Ugaaa Cumar Ugaas Xirsi

Wallahi waxaan la yaabanahay, reer Garaad and reer Cusmaan were brought back before totally joining Ogaadeen, but how many other groups baa ku dhex milmay Ogaadeen hadan ku tagay? Khalaf Gowracne??

Those people know their Mareexaan. Nobody joined Cagdheer. A section of Axmed Garaad called reer Caamir still live in Qabridahar and Nogob areas. I know Yusuf Maxamed Daud also live with us. In fact; Eng Cabdirisaaq Cawil the mayor of Qabridahar is Reer Yusuf and his mom is reer Wacays Qambi of the Axmed Garaad. The heego Cagadheers were crying when Eng Cabdirisaaq got elected as the mayor of Qabridahar. This people were feed by the lies of Cabdi ileey. Mustafa Cagjeer told them that Somali Galbeed is shared by all Somalis and Mareexaan do live in Qabridahar and the greater Qorexeey region. Reer Cismaan Neefkuucashe iyo Wardheer aageeda dagan. Qolo Makahiil laadhaho ayaa qaaraanka isla bixiyaan and those hate each other. Somehow; reer Cisman iyo Makahiil la isma tuso

Here is the some pictures when Ugaas Maxamed Keyse visited the Mareexaan community in Qabridahar. The mayor is the tall guy in the middle standing right next to Wariye Mahad Bashiir
