There is a cultural relationship between Mauritania, southern Morocco and Western Sahara called the Hassani culture which is an afro-Arab-Berber culture therefore, Mauritania was subjected to military coups supported by Algeria, the arch enemy of Morocco this has led to Mauritania recognizing Polisario in order to maintain its stability but now it says that this concern has ceased to exist because it has become now a military force capable of taking the decision that serves both its sovereignty and stability away from pressures and the domination of Algeria and Morocco.
"Mauritania, according to the source, was not ready to denounce the president’s support for Polisario itself, fearing a military clash with Algeria’s proxy force.
The source said Mauritania feared that Algeria would militarily support Polisario action against Mauritania if it would stop recognizing Polisario itself."
