The recent history of Marehan in Nagele/Liban, defeat in 1991; then Harro Marehan -> Kabele -> Woreda of Deka Suftu

Post by Gubbet »

This is to set the general recent story of Marehan in Liban and Nagele while Sbashi puts more detailed perspective together;

Folks

You want to know why the Marehan of Liban (mostly reer Hassan but a lot of rer Guri with them) haven't been massacred/wiped out during the early 90's period when both thé Borana (Oromo) of Nagele and the Degoodiye (Somali) of Filtu convienently both timed their attack to coincide with the start of civil war in Somalia?

The Arsi interfered to protect Marehan after the defeat.

This is the fascinating thing about Arsi; when another Somali clan (Dagoodi) was at that time simultaneously attacking us with the Borana-----the Arsi (who also have grazing issues with Marehan mind you) stepped in to quite literally save the "existence" of Marehan in Liban.

It is difficult to understate the threat of ethnic cleansing Marehan faced in Liban at that time with virtually all factions in the Somali civil war attacking Marehan similarly in Somalia.

The Arsi did that because of Islam and because of respect for what they said was Marehan's help to them in their time of need as well.

This history is longer than the 1977 Ogaden War but includes even The Jeegir Resistance started by Sheikh Hussein (Marehan/rer Hassan) with Marehan leading the Somalis of Liban in alliance with Arsi against the reestablishment of Abyssinian rule aftee WW2.

  • That's how "Harro Marehan" settlement came to existence----the place where the displaced and uprooted Marehan fleeing Nagele and Liban were able to coalesce together for safety and numbers with Borana and Guji kept at bay by Arsi security guarantee.
  • Harro Marehan survived the turbulent 90's that way until reorganization of the federal system recognized it as a qabala (kabele) or settlementof the historic Marehan community of Nagele.
Subsequently Haro Marehan in the last decade was upgraded from settlement to district or from kabele to woreda.

THE WOREDA OF DEKA SUFTU OF LIBAN ZONE OF SOMALI REGION.[/i]

Jeegir we need to name our forces that in Jubaland. Iconic shit. They have Darawiish everywhere else. That’s a Puntland (Harti) thing no offense. We have our own lions. And oh Jeegirs lead Harti and Ogaden in this resistance as well. This is hidden knowledge of the School of Luuq.

The degoodia didn't attack us head on. The war started with ex-military boranas who defected from the army, attacking mx. It was a difficult war, we got caught unprepared. The degoodia were drunk off the kool-aid of Aideed, they hated darood. The men went out to fight, and the kids, women and livestock were left with the degoodia. What these guys did was backstab us then, and steal all of our livestock. Even when deeka suftu was formed, degoodia attacked us with the borana. Contesting Abdi Iley's decision, we were prepared then which is why we defeated both of them. Also the guji had less numbers in the war. It was mostly borana full of cuqdad and hate, who couldn't wait to xasuuq marehan. We used to bully both guji and borana together. Especially after and during 1977 war when we killed many of them.

Sbashi, are you speaking from eye witness accounts?

The most interesting thing about the Marehan history in Liban and Nagele is just how under told/unknown it is to the Somali speaking people when Marehan are the single most historically important Somali group in NAGELE---EVEN TODAY.

This reminds me of a conversation I came across a while back while researching this.

It is a conversation that took place on an Ethiopian forum called "Mereja" where a Somali guy giggles at an Oromo guy's "ignorance" then precedes to "correct" him with sneering arrogance.

The Somali is certain beyond a shadow of a doubt "Marehan" and Borana can't possibly be fighting because----

----because "Borana" are not at the "Somali border." :comeon:

The Oromo is like I don't know what you are talking about borders, Samaale, Mooyaale, blah blah blah.... "Marehan" is an aggressive, expansionist Somali group and right now they got their district on the doorstep of Nagele. "

The Somali then... well here read it yourself;

I colored the Somali guy Blue.

After little digging I realized the Somali poster was infamous on this site as well harping on about the usual. I won't say any names but it isn't that hard to figure out.

But really his profound ignorance (what an irony!) on this issue wasn't unique.

Only Garre and Dagoodi really understand how misleading and incorrect the infamous Somali clan mapping of southern Ethiopia and how deep Marehan are to Nageyle.

Yeah no one really knows about it. It's because the mx land was incorporated into oromia, while degoodia took the rest in somali region. When marehan was lost for 20 years. Sometimes deep into guji land, working in gold mines. The history why deeka suftu was made in 2015-2016 i will explain later. it took a lot of work from us to get that district. Even when it was made it took 2-3 wars to cement it.

Nageyle once had more marehan than oromo. It was where the ugaas (ibraahin) sat, now we lost the city. Deeka suftu btw is a small part of mx land. All the land from deeka suftu to negeyle is settled by mx. So it isn't that we are the doorstep of nageyle, it's that we've been pushed from nageyle to it's door step. During the war in 2017 we clearly told the oromo, you know exactly where we live and where our land used to be. The dumb degoodia were also fighting us because they didn't want to lose the parts that came under them in filtu. Our plan is to annex till nageyle and incorporate it. The borana know this, and it's what they are fighting against. During the war we've even captured land inside Oromia now we are back to surrounding nageyle. Deeka suftu till nageyle you see on the map is purely mx. If you leave the nageyle and go south of it you will see mx livestock.

Congrats Saddam,

Now we have a map to see how extensive just 1 (ONE) of your territories is as REER HASSAN GARSHIREEDLE---A SUB-CLAN OF MAREHAN----without even taking into account your crown 👑 glory of Luuq District or your other lands from Mooyaale to Afdheer to Bakool border Dollow down the Garbahaarey plateau to Buurdhuubo.

Deka Suftu seems to be about the size of Awdal, Nugaal, or Lower Shabelle.

It looks about 2/3 the size of Hiiraan or Waqooyi Galbeed.

Reer Hassan, a sub-clan of Marehan ka waran----nimankaan Xassan Garshireedle waa the Marehan Christopher Columbus, the Sade Lewis and Clark---ever going West :damn:

This is actually very informative. We need to give Nageyle as much new coverage as Dire dhaba.

If that is informative, try 70 years earlier. :)

MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!! I know this personally because my jiffo lives in Shilabo to THIS DAY. But majority of my jiffo relocated to Libaan. Forget my jiffo. My own great grandfather came to Libaan from Shilabo with my grandfather, my great grandmother and great uncles. My grandfather told me that it was difficult to live there when he was a kid because they'd always be fleeing as there were was conflict. They'd go inside the border of somalia, then leave the border, always relocating.
