ACLED records surprisingly show HG vs XW in Mataban is more "violent" than HG vs Marehan in Balanbale

Post by Gubbet »

It seems "Marehan issues" are just highly or over sensationalized in everything including "clan clashes" and "political territoriality."

Maybe not even just sensationalized, but really only even shed light on because of imposing political interest shown by the Somali people.

I don't know how else to explain the uniquely extreme disproportionality in the treatments of "Balanbale" and "Matabaan" in Somali media and socio-politico discourse.

"Everything" ever attempted to be said about "Balanbale" actually "happened" in Matabaan;

1. Balanbale is a town that is almost 100% settled by the same clan that first formed its settlement.
  • Matabaan is a town that has seen almost 100% replacement of the clan that first settled it. It was a "Hawadle" settlement that is now 99% settled by Ayr.
2. While myth creation around "Dhusamareb" originality as Marehan is never lost for creativity, there is 0% disagreement about any causation by violent displacement or consequence of hostilities.
  • Yet, Matabaan, as recognized in both impacted group's "oral histories," has it entire modern status quo implicated in severe and consequential territorial loss and displacement as a result of an epic and watershed local conflict.
3. And so knowing a little about these disparate pieces of information about Matabaan, imagine the growing surprise and recognition as I had while looking at ACLED records of reported conflict around Balanbale since 1997, when I started to notice right next to Balanbale situated in between there and Beled-Weyne town is a place I knew was "Matabaan"---but which I was shocked to find "more violent" and really in a suspended state of "continuing crisis" or "emergency."

Ayr/HG and Xawaadle kill more of each other than Ayr/HG and Marehan and are locked in a vicious existential and prolonged conflict.
  1. Yet it is not even recognized, let alone addressed and even worse it denies the locally affected victims the resources and intervention needed to "arrest" the conflict.
  2. For you see---something positive comes out of the weird Somali people's fetishization of Marehan and conflict----the attention is sunlight. The attention brings intervention...it brings resources...it brings even local community recovery support from both internationals and domestically.
  3. It also brings the sustained engagement of socio-cultural elite institutions who "internalize" a personal responsibility in perceived matter of immense importance, i.e. the old farts called "Elders" take seriously their one real role for even existing in Somali culture namely for preventing and diffusing conflict
In this case I make this analogy;

"Balanbale" is really like a privileged little corner of suburbia facing the inner city that has problems or "run-ins" with random loitering and even sometimes vandalism at the gate and fences----

But "Matabaan" is the "projects" in the inner city with the violent crime, the neighborhood gangs, and ignored and unaddressed vicious cycle of insecurity.

That place needs siren bells and intervention.

I don’t wanna hear it. They the capital. They Superman for darkies. I’m Batman, I’m cooler than that. Intersection of wealth and poverty. Manhattan or Harlem. It’s ambiguous in 2022:

“Capital, he said, had no conscience and no fatherland.”— John Buchan, The Thirty-Nine Steps

They the capital.
They are victims.

This is really an example of the disparity in "family/community" support between "domestic violence" and "violence outside the home."

Balanbale is perceived as "violence outside the home" by both camps.

Both camps are intensely supported by their "familly/community" whose value as a resource for surviving and overcoming violence cannot be quantified.

Matabaan, like you are highlighting, is a case of "domestic violence" perceived politically and socio -culturally by both camps.

"Family support" is sometimes even the inverse in "domestic violence"----for you see it is "family" that is implicated in the violence.

The folks involved are victimized X2 .. metaphysically and conceptually.

There is even a victimization X3--- by witnesses and the resignation "it is between them."

Domestic violence is vicious beast.

This is not a case for empathy; I do not love Xawaadle or feel more warm or closer to them, or view their perspective or their position more just than Ayr in this story at all as a matter of reality.

In other words, I as a Marehan find myself with no greater personal bias towards Xawaadle or with Ayr and that this is not exactly a story about "encroachment" as Ayr are deegaan for all intents and purposes which makes this morally "ambiguous."

I sympathize with the victims. Empathy is unneeded and irrelevant to this conflict.

It’s cuz you the West Coast bro. You want to speak on East Coast affairs that don’t concern you. You want to pass judgement and act Hollywood when the truth was revealed in under 2 years. Empathy is recognizing neither of us have equity with them. I don’t bro. That’s your ends. So to “sympathize” when really. It was a rogue faction amongst the greater collective of the underworld. I sympathize for my own. 8 up. They OT men. It’s a tight knit city here. The other stuff? It’s East Coast G checking. We’re MX there’s a higher standard of conduct on the battlefield for us. The other stuff? It is salt throwing to the men.

I do not like moral guilt. It makes me taste lead and I despise the taste of lead. When I randomly came across this issue; it was one of those activations or burden of responsibility. It's corny, but its the truth. I identified "neglect" was partly contributing to the death and pain of these communitie so to contibute to "neglect" was to contribute to the suffering. This topic is really my way of absolving moral guilt. I let the entire focking world know there is a problem there. Now I walk away to get my iced soda pop. Reality is cold and hollywoody, at the same time, in any focking second of everyday. You reading too much into things these days.

I don’t like outsiders telling me what’s right or wrong. I don’t like moral relativism either. Unlike you my friend. I see through everyone. That’s why I’m the brunette. I threw salt on the right drills. You threw salt on the wrong drills. That’s why you’re OT. End of conversation:
