These three key
historical periods have an important point in common, namely that each of the proponents of the
Somali nationalist struggle (i.e. Sayyid, WSLF and ONLF) were all defeated – militarily, diplomatically,
or by virtue of changing political dynamics which invited rebel groups so seek their political objectives
through peaceful means (as in the case of the ONLF – still without having achieved what they set out
to).
