Ugaas developed from Goyta.

Post by Gubbet »

It is reasonable to suspect the Marehan were the 1st Somali Ugaas given the historical record as the earliest corroborated entitlement to Goyta. It is also more than reasonable to surmise that Ugaas and Garaad are probably the oldest and longest Somali traditional titles in usage that are indigenous to the Horn. For example not "Emir" and "Sultan."

Regarding when exactly Ugaas as a specifically Somali appropriated traditional title distinct to Goyta/Get'a/Gaz'a as a rewarded Harari Adalian imperial title would have taken place, for this my only hypothesis at this point would be Marehan oral history.

Essentially one of the top 3 most consequential moments in Marehan oral history is the saga concerning the change from "Garad" to "Ugas" as the title of kinship with an internal coup by a cadet branch that successfully displaced the ruling housing. The ruling house was the Reer Garad of Garaad Hiraabe (using the title of Garad as investiture) who then became the last "Garad" title within Marehan. The cadet branch that came into power were the Hussein Yusuf Matan who then elected to invest with a new title of "Ugaas." This house is today still with investiture devolved down to the Reer Ugas Shermaarke.

Now the Reer Garaad and even Hiraabe is memorialized in Marehan oral history as the ruling house of the clan with the title of Garad as investiture. And this Hiraabe and ruling branch of Marehan in the oral history is then miraculously corroborated being recorded in the Conquest of Abyssinia as the chief of Marehan. His family is recorded as the only Somali rewarded with the Adal honorific "Goyta."

When you bridge oral history and the written record the logical hypothesis presents itself that the birth of "Ugaas" is probably quite similar to the development of "Ceasar" (later Kaiser/Czar). Namely the honorific name of Julius Caesar itself became the title of investiture post Julius Ceasar. The Roman title during his life was Dictator!

All of this holistically reinforces the probability that the upstart Marehan cadet branch decided to break with the memory of the Garaad title so synonymous with the kin they displaced for chieftaincy that they then, essentially, appropriated the honorific Adal imperial title which had been rewarded to their ruling family, or the title of Goyta, itself being a very powerful entitlement buttressed by its prestigious usage in the land of Adal important to the Somali countryside at large.

And thus Goyta became like Ceasar to come to be known in the modern era as Ugaas like Czar!

Goyta - Geta - Gez'a - Ag'aze - O'gaz - U'gaas

Ugas Nurre's grandson Ugas Hersi Ugas Mohamed Ugas Nurre who was the grandfather of the current Ugas Mohamed Ugas Hashi Ugas Hersi would famously later move to Ganaane (Gedo) as part of the Galti Migration when the bulk of Marehan had migrated to make court in Diirharo as the new base of the seat of Sade.

After Ugas Hersi had moved, a princely line was sourced for the Marehan left in Ximan (modern central Somalia, Shilaabo, Warder) from a cadet branch of house of Ugas Shermaarke which was Rer Shirwac Ugas Shermaarke so as not to mix the senior branch's preeminence as the Ugaas Guud which was Rer Ugas Guled Ugas Shermarke.

This is why the Ugas of Sade in Caabudwaaq is a junior princely line subordinate to the Ugas Guud in Garbahaarey which is the senior kingly line.

Ugas Hersi Ugas Mohamed who made the move died August 19, 1952 in Lugh-Ferrandi (modern Luuq, Gedo Region).

Marehan history and its effect on Somalis as a whole historically, as this topic about Goyta and the birth of the title of Ugas from Goyta shows from even within in-clan intrigue, is more important to the socio-cultural history of the Somali people more than almost many Somalis can fathom.

Qanbi.....................Faarax
Allamagan............Guuleed
Dhaawayd.............Sharmarke

Xiriir.......................Khalaf
Axmad..................Xuseen
Garaad Hiraabe...Yuusuf
Mataan................Mataan
Ciis -------------------Ciis

For the 3 generations in bold, Reer Garaad Hiraabe and Reer Khalaf Xuseen battled for the marehan traditonal leadership .Finally, Reer Garaad were crushed in cold blood somewhere in Mudug.

Ugaas Guuleed was perhaps the first grand Marehan Ugaas after the defeat of Reer Garaad .

About the oldest Ugasate, Ogaden,Gaaljecel and Xawaadle are more worthy candidates than Marehan.I infered that conclusion by comparing the timeline of Ogaden and Marehan Ugaasate

Guuleed--‐---Nuur Cubudhiye
Sharmarke--Warfaa aar
Diini-------------Magan
Faarax----------Warfaa
Guleed----------Xirsi
Sharmarke----Ugaas Khalaf
Khalaf-----------Xasan
Xuseen---------Khalaf guun
Yuusuf-----------Yuusuf
Mataan----------Maxaad Roob
Ciis-----------------Cabdille
Maxamad-------Maxamad
Daauud-----------Subeer

Ugaas Xirsi (now largest rer cabdille clan comprising of Warfaa,Maalinguur, Ugaas Kooshin and others) was the fourth Ogaden Ugaas.Ugas Xirsi was preceded by Ugaas Guleed(His brother),Ugas khalaf (his father) and Ugaas Nuur (His uncle) and Ugas Galab the first. So, Ogaden arguably had the FIRST established Ugaasate

Please note the bridging of oral and historically corroborated evidence to situate this historical analysis on this matter.

There is historical continuity that so far, at least in so far as what I have come across, only situating foundationally the story line of Marehan.

  1. Marehan oral history vividly rooted in change from Garaad - Ugaas
  2. That oral history identifying the Garaadship of Garaad Hiraabe facing rebellion
  3. The oral history concluding in successful transplantation of Hiraabe line's chieftancy
  4. Modern continuance of a single Ugaasate which displaced that single Garaadship
And then we discover modern historical record independent to Somalis that establishes

  1. The existence of 500 years ago of a Hiraabe Marehan chieftancy
  2. The awarded Adali imperial title of Goyta/Geta/Geza to the Marehan Hiraabe
  3. The preeminence of the Marehan chieftancy over other Somali groups
  4. The only existence of a Goyta Somali chieftancy being the Marehan
  5. Marehan oral history vividly rooted in change from Garaad - Ugaas
  6. That oral history identifying the Garaadship of Garaad Hiraabe facing rebellion
  7. The oral history concluding in successful transplantation of Hiraabe line's chieftancy
  8. Modern continuance of a single Ugaasate which displaced that single Garaadship
This is called 'historical continuity."

I will also add the sudden proliferation of the Multitude of " Ugaas" groups suddenly showing formation among the Ogaden in particular is something that hints inverse to being the focal point of original development.

It is much more likely there was an 'emulation' consequence.

Namely the birth of the development of the title by a prestigious cultural influence led to a "rush" to emulate it with disorderly competition breaking out along many completing units not united them under a single chieftancy.

Think Somalia in civil war, disparate and disjointed coagulated masses suddenly adopting "federalism"---emulating the one true existing federal state of Puntland with a federal state President---then suddenly "rush" in disorderly conduct with federal state "Presidents" then suddenly developing overnight all across the territory.

The presence of the Ata/Hati/Gai'tet/Goy'ta/Ge'ta/Gez'a/A'gaz'i/O'gaz/U'gaas title is now corroborated in Marehan for at least 21 generations.

It has been used as 'supreme' investiture for 17 generations.

There have been 34 Marehan chiefs with the title as some part of their entitlement.

It should be understokd I am not insulting or maligning any groups. There is no "xuquuq" in contention here that should cause the development of negative personal motivations. This is an elucidation based on the historical evidence.

GARAAD DHAAWAYD CISMAAN was the Bartire Garaad in Axmad Gurey era (1520s).Garaad Faarad Ileey who lived a century later (1620) was perhaps the last powerful Bartire Garaad of the entire Absame. Ogaden defeated Garaad Faarax Ileey and consequently established their own Ugaasate. Ugaas Nuur was the first successfully appointed Ugaas even though Cali Naasir Maxaadroob and Galab Guled Khalaf Maxaadroob breifly held the position. There is a famous old Ogaden adage taunting the short tenure of Ugaas Cali Naasir

"Ugaas Cali Naasir iyo Ugaasnimo isku habooni la'aa"

Dhulmareen Jarmal ah oo la dhihi jiray Von Prof. Dr. C. Keller ayaa sannadkii 1896'dii wax ka qoray Saldanooyinkii carrigaas ka jiray iyo sidii loo kala dhaxlay, aan idinla wadaago. Wuxuu Keller yidhi;

"Dhulka ugu Koonfureeya carro Ogaadeen, waxaa berigii hore degi jiray Oromada, waxaa se riixay Soomaalida. Sida la weriyo, Ugaas Khalaf wuxuu ahaa Boqorkii ugu horreeyay ee dhulkan ka qabsaday Oromada. Waxaa isagana xukunkii ka dhaxlay wiilkiisii Ugaas Xirsi. Ugaas Warfaa baa ku xigay oo ka la wareegay, Waxaa isna kala sii wareegay Ugaas Cilmi. Ugaas Cilmina waxaa ka dhaxlay Ugaas Magan. Ugaas Maganna Ugaas Warfaa-aar, isna waxaa kala wareegay Ugaas Nuur-Cubudhiye. Waxaa ku xigay Ugaas Maxamuud, dabadeedna Ugaas Muxumed iyo Ugaas Buraale. Ugaas Islaan ayaa ka dhaxlay, waxaa na ka dhaxlay Ugaas Faarax. Hadda waxaa Ugaasnimada haya Ugaas Xaashi, wuu na noolyahay, inkastoo sharafta laga qaaday. Waxay u muuqataa in dhagarta ay ka dambeeyeen hal jifo oo hoose.

Ugaaskii shanaad oo la odhan jiray Ugaas Magan, wuxuu lahaa laba wiil oo la kala yidhaahdo Warfaa iyo ninkii dhaxlay oo Dalal la odhan jiray. Reer Dalal waxay rabeen inay xukunka muddo dheer sii hayaan. Laakiin dhawr sano ka hor baa waxaa is beddel ku yimid ushii taxanaha ahayd ee la isu dhiibayay.

Rag baa damcay in canshuur saa'id ah ay ku soo rogaan wixii safro ah ee "Carro Ogaadeen" soo galaya, inkastoo Ugaas Xaashi amray inaan wax canshuur ah safraha laga qaadi karin. Sidaa aawadeed waxaa dhacay kacdoon, ay hoggaanka u hayeen Reer Dalal oo meeshiiba kala wareegay Ugaaskii.
Haddeer taladii waxaa maroojistay oo haysta dhawr nin oo isku qoys hoose ah.

Ugaas Xaashi iyo laba kun oo qof oo raaciyaddiisii ahi way guureen, waxayna degeen Doh oo dhacda dhanka Koonfureed. Halkaasuu haddeer ku noolyahay. Waa nin da' ah oo aan wax saamayn ah lahayn. Inkastoo marmar uu booqdo tuulooyin ku yaalla Faaf.”

Wuxuu dhulmareenku hadalkiisa ku soo gunaanaday dhawrkan sadar ee hoose ee uu yidhi;

Raggu sida uu isu dhaxlay haddaynu jiil ahaan u tirinno, kuma khaldanin ayaan filayaa inaan nidhaahno; 200 ilaa iyo 250 sano ka hor ayay ahayd markii Ugaas Khalaf dhulkan ka qabsaday Oromada."

Please see again the salient point;
Please note the bridging of oral and historically corroborated evidence to situate this historical analysis on this matter.
The oral history tells a 'story' so simply using it is merely "storytelling."

The written record here is an " original narrative" which provides an " objective" reference point.

Bridging the two is "exploration" through content analysis for the purposes of "explaining" something.

Simply just "retelling" the story as heard is "storytelling" as I have said.

There is nothing wrong with story telling---you are just picking the wrong fight with the wrong tools.

The first Marehan Ugaas was Ugaas Guleed Sharmaarke (1670s)

The first prominent Ogaden Ugas was Ugas Nuur Xasandheere (1600s)

The first Iidoor Suldaan was Suldaan Guleed .A contemporary of Guleed Sharmarke Diini and Ugaas Nuur Cubudhiye (1780-1830)

Gadabursi Ugaasate started with Ugaas Cali in 1600s who probably lived the same era of the first Ogaden Ugaas

Ciise, Xawaadle, and Gaaljecel are three prominent clans which I believe to have a long tree of Ugaasyo.

Ciise Ugaasate belong to Wardiiq
Xawaadle --Faramage ,Reer Ugaas Warfaa
Gaaljecel----Abtisame, Xaaji Saalax

The Garaad title is the oldest one, Warsangali,Bartire,Dhulbaante ,Geri are the prominent clans with ancient Garaad traditions.

Given the proliferation of the "Guled" and "Shermaarke" names in the Marehan Ugaas lineage, I thought it prudent to point out the "Shermaarke" who battled the Hiraabe Reer Garad line Garaads for Marehan chieftancy is not the Shermaarke of Reer Diini but the ancestor of Reer Diini, Shermaarke Khalaf Hussein.

The Shermaarke of Diini merely inherited the Ugas title like his father Diini Ugas and grandfather Faarax Ugaas and great-grandfather Guled who inherited it from his great--great-grandfather Shermarke Khalaf Hussein.

Image

Folks not of this background would make this mistake like they would try to reinterpret having the power and ability to pioneer and conquer new territories is "running away" from the deserts of central Somalia or that a clan like Reer Siyad Ugas who positioned for itself the heart of Garbahaarey and Diirharo camel country, having as much land as entire clans like Cayr or Saleebaan in comparison, is "landless" ironically only really being second in Marehan when it comes to amount of land after Rer Hassan with who knows once you include their land from Kaxandhaale in Balanbale to Fadhigaradle in Shilabo.

Hadaad noolaato waxaad la yaabto walle indho waad saari!

Shermarke Khalaf, not Shermarke Diini folks.
