The rise of Imam Maxamed Gaas

Post by Goita »

During a period of internal strife and discord within the Adal kingdom, which plunged the realm into a profound state of turmoil and regression, a significant turning point occurred on the fateful date of September 1577. At that time, the people of Harar, recognizing the dire need for stable governance, elected Imaam Maxamed "Jasa" Ibrahim as their esteemed leader. Notably, Imam Maxamed hailed from an illustrious lineage, being a relative of the esteemed Imam Axmed Al Ghazi, widely regarded as the preeminent Somali king in the annals of history, particularly within the esteemed Reer Garaad clan. The Hararis, driven by the belief that his noble lineage would engender unity and prosperity, placed their hopes upon his capable shoulders. Subsequently, the line of Imam Maxamed Gaas ascended to power and ruled over the dominion for an impressive span of 62 years.

In due course, the Afars, asserting their defiance against the authority of Imam Aḥmed Abrām, embarked upon a relentless campaign of rebellion, resulting in the deliberate persecution and coerced assimilation of members belonging to the revered Marexan clan within the confines of the Afar region. The indomitable Debne, We'ima, and Mudayto Afar clans, driven by an insatiable desire for territorial expansion, orchestrated a strategic advance toward the southern reaches of the Afar expanse. It is during this tumultuous period that they forged a stirring and resonant gabay, an oral poetic expression of their collective aspirations and triumphant ambitions. They then formulated this gabay:

Note, it is even stated that the Imams were Arabs, and the only clan which was known to historically domiante this region and claim an Arab heritage was none other than the Marexan clan

Ugut Laaqok Abne Carra = When we started our migration (conquest) from Laaqo

Baxuwwa baxi raaqay inne = We disowned the son of a lady (We tell the cowards "son of ladies" to say behind

Gexe wayne baaxo mannu = There is no land that we could not explore

Gexe wayne baaxo xiiko = The only land ever trodden is the grave

Marreekhan aqantu nuble = We have crossed the frog of Marrekhan

Mukne wayne mara mannu fartu Yiebraa= There is no people we have not teased, barring the Yiebraa

Dat Amcari ma qabal le? = What cowards the black Amhara are?

Many Sade were absorbed in the Afar region, the city of Aussa is home to many Afars, the region of Gewane is filled with Wagardhac and Celi to as far as the Cawash region, there is even a place called Doha named after Doha Soha which is the Arabic name for Hodanbari (bright morning, Nuur Ibn Mujahid al Doha Suha) the Facaaye also lived in Halay Dage, there is even a place called the Marehan Shet. A huge batch of Reer Xasan and Facaaye also migrated to western Sitti joining the Wardiq clan, and it could be theorized that Cumardiin who was believed to be an Ciise Garaad was in fact of this lineage, since the Reer Xasan are the Ugasses of CIise, and for any doubters the CIise themselves admit to the fact that 3 out of 6 of their clans are not originally CIise, but from migratory Darood clans fleeing turmoil from Oromos and civil war, Marexan can be found in east and west Hararghe to Sitti all the way to Afar and Shewa and even past it, the whole regionw as dominated by Marexan.

In the wake of epochal tumultuous upheaval, a transformative juncture emerged, wherein Waziir Ali Ibn Dawuud, a scion of the Habar Ciise clan within the distinguished lineage of Marexan, ascended to the esteemed title of Emir of Harar, deftly severing the ties that bound them to Aussa and meticulously crafting an independent bastion. Embarking upon a sovereign trajectory, his lineage reigned supreme for an awe-inspiring expanse of approximately 240 years, a testament to their resolute sovereignty that left an indelible mark upon the annals of history. Eventually, the destiny of the Marexan dynasty converged with the coursing tides of fate, leading to their assimilation into the tapestry of the Ethiopian kingdom, whereby their storied legacy was enshrined for perpetuity.
Marexan would remain there for a few hundred years before initiating their migrations to Ximaan and then later Liban zone and, Jubaland, NFD and SWS.
