The phrase is used, along with similar phrases, to deify Christ.

Herein lies the paradox:
The later addition of this phrase is used today in theological debates to further solidify the idea of Christ's deification, even though the text is not about him.

Meanwhile, the text—in its earliest and even expanded form—focuses on the Lord God (the Father), not on Jesus.


While the oldest and most important manuscripts (Sinaitic, Alexandrian, and Ephraim) do not contain this phrase in this passage,

Biblical scholars like Comfort considered this passage a scribal invention and removed it from their critical editions
