Are Embryos Haraam????

Post by Cawar »

Do you think its Haram to do stem cell research on frozen embryos??
knowing that these embryos could be developed into humans if implanted on a fertile woman..??

But on the other side of the argument...these embryos that are composed of only a fertilized egg and a sperm... frozen, could and would benefit many diseased people who live with chronic conditions like Diabetes, heart diseases, Neurological diseases(paralyzed ppl) if used on research.

So the question is are these embryos considered living creatures according to Islam and therfore Xaraam to dispose them(maybe collect them in the first place) or even involve them in any sceintific research which will destroy them eventually?? or is it Ok for the greater cause of curing many diseases???

Open to all...no need to know much about the subject in order to participate..so plz feel free to poise your thoughts.

the stem cell research can soppusedly cure many un-cured diseases, but science has gone too far, and is messing with God, all diseases can be cured, except aids, and there far more other ways to cure them, but using using embryos, to do that is haram to the fullest.

Even Aids has drugs that limit its spread, infectivity and its ability to cause an early death...

But what makes you say its haram to the fullest about the stem cell embryos?? any quranic verses?? Ahadiths to support??

Since this is your topic why not give us your view first.

We can't agree on trivial things, and besides there are no scholars here, but I can give you my personal opinion on the issue, but you go first, sir. Laughing

I think Science hasn't gone far enough. Or are you saying we should stop all research and go back to living in the stone age?
science has gone too far, and is messing with God
God is all powerful, therefor a few scientist meddling in thier labs wont bother him. If you say it does, then is god really all powerful? Watch what you say!

You got me there...but you should've gone for your personal opinion and asked for mine. Laughing

Well...I am not a scholar..but since we are told that life begins when an angel blows the soul into the fetus at around 4 months of pregnancy inside the mothers womb(not sure abt the time) and the frozen embryos are less than four months old usually and frozen on top of that...I think it shouldnt be Xaraam if its being used for the purpose of creating something beneficial for mankind.

No need for Hadiths, tafseers, wadiirs, badiirs or Al-Quran... 2/3 fertilized ova never servive to live baby. That would mean Allah is the world's biggest abortionist, no? Who else is responsible for the spontaneous miscarriage of fertilized ova? The buck has to stop somewhere, in this case the guy is Allah. He is the guy ultimately in charge of everything in particular the unborn.

The pertinent question you should all ask yourselves is: Is Allah abortionist, ie a baby killer?

Typical avoidance response from typical halfwitted dolt.

I gave you a link dealing with first trimaster, showing how approx. 50% of fertilized eggs never lead to successful birth. Hence, those fertilized ovum were aborted by NATURE or Allah if your Mohammadan.

What exactly do you disagree with what I've said? If most fertilized eggs NEVER lead to live babies, isn't Allah responsible for their aborting?

Not every one is entitled and qualified to talk about Xalaal and Xaram so Allah Tacalaa tells us in the Quran Al Kareem ask people of knowledge if you do not know. I have done some research on this Topic and this is what I came across

Question :

What is the ruling on cloning of human beings? How does it affect lineage, marriage, inheritance and other rulings on family matters? May Allaah reward you with much good.

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

Allaah has created man in the best of forms, and bestowed upon him the greatest honours. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And indeed We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Tayyibaat (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preferment”

[al-Israa’ 17:70]

Allaah has honoured him with reason and responsibility, and has made him a khaleefah on earth, to populate and develop it. He has honoured man by giving him the Message which suits his fitrah (natural state), indeed it is that fitrah itself, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“So set you (O Muhammad) your face towards the religion (of pure Islamic Monotheism) Haneef (worship none but Allaah Alone). Allaah’s Fitrah (i.e. Allaah’s Islamic Monotheism) with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalq-illaah (i.e. the religion of Allaah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not”

[al-Room 30:30]

Islam is keen to preserve the upright fitrah of man by preserving the five holistic aims: religion, life, reason, lineage and property, and protecting them from every change that may corrupt them, whether by its cause or its effects. This is stated in the hadeeth qudsi which was narrated by al-Qurtubi from the report of al-Qaadi Ismaa’eel, [in which Allaah says]: “I have created all My slaves as haneefs (pure monotheists), but the shayaateen (devils) come to them and try to divert them from their religion… and they commanded them to alter My creation.” (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 5/389)

Allaah taught man that which he did not know, and commanded him to seek and examine and think and ponder, as He says in many aayahs, such as the following (interpretations of the meanings):

“Did they not see…”

[Ta-Ha 20:89, etc.

“Do they not look at…”

[al-Ghaashiyah 88:17]

“Does not man see that We have created him from Nutfah (mixed male and female sexual discharge semen drops)”

[Yaa-Seen 36:77

“Verily, in these things, there are Ayaat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) for people who reflect”

[al-Ra’d 13:3]

“Verily, therein is indeed a sign for people who have wisdom”

[al-Nahl 6:67]

“Verily, in this is a Reminder for men of understanding”

[al-Zumar 39:1]

“Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists

[al-‘Alaq 96:1]

Islam does not place any restrictions on the freedom of scientific research, or place any obstacles in its way, because it is a mean of understanding the laws of Allaah in His creation, but Islam also stipulates that this cannot be left without any guidelines or regulations on the introduction of scientific results into the public domain without first passing them through the sieve of sharee’ah, so that that which is permissible may be allowed through whilst that which is haraam is prevented from passing. So it is not permissible to implement something simply because it can be implemented, rather it has to be beneficial knowledge which serves the interests of mankind and protects them from harm; this knowledge has to protect the dignity of man and the lofty purpose for which Allaah created him. So man should not become the subject of experimentation, and scientific research should not impinge upon the unique identity of the individual and his distinct characteristics, or lead to disruption of the social framework or dissolution of the foundations of kinship and lineage, or the family structure that has been known throughout human history in the shade of Allaah’s laws and on the solid foundation of His rulings.

Among the new scientific discoveries that man has made in modern times is that which the media speaks of a great deal, that which is known as cloning. We have to explain the ruling of Islam on this matter, after quoting some details about it given by a group of Muslim scientists and experts in this field:

Definition of cloning:

It is known that the laws of Allaah concerning His creation dictate that the human being grows from the joining of two cells, the nucleus of each of which contains a number of chromosomes, half the number of chromosomes in the cells of the human body. When the cell of the father (the husband), which is called the sperm, joins with the cell of the mother (the wife), which is called the egg, they turn into a fertilized cell which contains the complete number of chromosomes, and has the potential to multiply. When it settles in the uterus of the mother, it grows and becomes a whole new created being, by the will of Allaah. This cell multiplies, so it becomes two identical cells, then four, then eight… then it continues to multiply until it reaches the stage where the cells start to differ from one another and become specialized. If, during the phase when the cells are multiplying but have not yet begun to specialize, one cell separates from the others, this will result in identical twins. Some experiments have been done in which cells were artificially separated from animal embryos, resulting in identical twins, but nothing of this sort has been reported regarding human beings. This is regarded as a kind of cloning, because it is producing identical copies, so it is called cloning by splitting.

There is another way of cloning a complete creature, which is done by taking the complete number of chromosomes, in the form of a complete nucleus from one of the cells of the body, and inserting it into an egg cell from which the nucleus has been removed, thus forming a fertilized cell containing a complete number of chromosomes and at the same time able to multiply; if it is planted in the uterus of the mother it will develop and grow and be born as a complete creature, by the will of Allaah. This kind of cloning is known as nuclear transfer or nuclear insertion in the egg cell. This is what is understood by the word “cloning” when it is used, and this is what happened in the case of the sheep “Dolly”. But this new creature is not an exact copy of the original, because the egg of the mother from which the nucleus was removed still contains some remnants of the nucleus in the material surrounding the removed nucleus, and these remnants have a noticeable effect in altering the characteristics which are inherited from the body cells, and this also has not yet been reported to have been done with humans.

So cloning means producing one or more living beings by transferring the nucleus of a body cell to an egg whose nucleus has been removed, or splitting an fertilized egg at the stage before the tissues and organs become distinct.

It is obvious that these and similar procedures do not represent the act of creation, in whole or in part. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Or do they assign to Allaah partners who created the like of His creation, so that the creation (which they made and His creation) seemed alike to them?” Say: ‘Allaah is the Creator of all things; and He is the One, the Irresistible’”

[al-Ra’d 13:16]

“Then tell Me (about) the (human) semen that you emit.

Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator?

We have decreed death to you all, and We are not outstripped,

To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.

And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember (or take heed)?”
[al-Waaqi’ah 56:58-62]

“Does not man see that We have created him from Nutfah (mixed male and female sexual discharge semen drops). Yet behold he (stands forth) as an open opponent.

And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: ‘Who will give life to these bones after they are rotten and have become dust?’

Say: (O Muhammad) ‘He will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All-Knower of every creation!’

He Who produces for you fire out of the green tree, when behold you kindle therewith.

Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth, Able to create the like of them? Yes, indeed! He is the All-Knowing Supreme Creator.

Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is!”

[Yaa-Seen 36:77-82]

“And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth).

Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman).

Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is Allaah, the Best of creators”

[al-Mu’minoon 23:12-14]

Based on the discussion above, the Committee has decided the following:

(1) That human cloning using the two methods mentioned, or any other method that leads to reproduction of human beings is haraam

(2) If there is any transgression of the shar’i ruling mentioned above, then the consequences of that should be discussed to explain the shar’i rulings concerning such cases.

(3) All scenarios in which a third party may be added to the marital relationship are forbidden, whether that involves a womb (surrogacy), eggs, sperm or cells for cloning.

(4) It is permissible in Islam to use the technology of cloning and genetic engineering in cases of germs and microscopic creatures, plants and animals, within the limits and guidelines of sharee’ah, for the purpose of serving interests and warding off harm.
One Question are these embryos firstly from natural pregnancy? Let’s say from Abortion? Confused
Yes and no. They're obtained from embroy regardless of whether it was 'naturally concieved or artificially. The embroy, as things stand now, would be destroyed in the process of extracting stem cells.

But you muslim problem is with the destruction of the embroy. As I said already such worry is misplaced. Allah himself aborts ever 2 out 3 fertilized egg. Which begs the questions: why should you muslims have problem with stem cell research?

Question :

What is the ruling on artificial insemination using eggs or sperm from someone other than the spouses, or using a surrogate mother? To whom should the child be attributed in such cases?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

If a third party, other than the spouses, is introduced into the process of fertilization, such as eggs coming from another woman or another woman acting as a surrogate mother, or sperm coming from another man, then fertilization in such cases is haraam, because it is counted as zinaa (adultery). When a woman uses the sperm of a man, this comes under the same rulings as intercourse in terms of what is halaal and what is haraam.

With regard to the child who is born as the result of such a process, he is to be attributed to the mother who bore him, and not to the man who produced the sperm, as is the ruling in the case of zinaa (fornication or adultery). If that man claims to be the father and no one disputes that, then the child may be attributed to him, because the Lawgiver is keen that people should be named after their fathers. With regard to the hadeeth, “The child belongs to the (marriage-)bed and for the adulterer is the stone,” it is to be interpreted as referring to cases where there is a dispute, as is clear from the incident which gave rise to this hadeeth.

Question :

A person was infertile, and the doctors told him, you do not have any sperm. He went abroad and made an agreement to take sperm from someone else and place it in his wife’s womb, without telling her. She gave birth, and she does not know the truth. Then he repented to Allaah and he is asking what he should do.

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

We put this question to Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah preserve him), who answered as follows:

Of course these are not his children.

Question: He knows that the sperm did not come from him.

Answer: They are not his children. Some scholars say that if a zaani claims his child as his own, the child may be named after him, but this is not his child. He is not like a zaani, because in the case of a zaani the sperm comes from him, but this sperm did not come from this man. He has to disown these children and give them to the government or do something with them (by putting them in a place where they will be taken care of or giving them to a charitable organization which will sponsor their upbringing).

Question: Shall we tell him, you should not call them after yourself (give them your name)?

Answer: Yes, (tell him) to disown them, and give them to the government, or let them stay with their mother, on the condition that they are not named after this man.

Question: Does the hadeeth “the child is for the bed” apply in this case?

Answer: No, it does not apply.

[ends]

We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound. This is one of the (crimes) which modern civilization has committed against people’s lineages and honour, and one of the ways in which it has deceived people. Social disasters of this sort are the expected result of the sins of lying, forgery and deceit which this man has committed against his wife. How could he have done this thing, which is forbidden by sharee’ah, and which goes against the shar’i aims of protecting lineages and against his own manhood? This is a particularly ugly way of cooperating in sin and transgression and taking part in falsehood, on the part of the donor or vendor of the sperm, and the criminal doctor who agreed to do the operation. It is to Allaah that we complain when religion becomes a stranger in people’s lives and the immoral enemies of Islam prevail. And Allaah is the One Whose help we seek.

This Topic is Big so I am just gonna get as much info as I can insha*Allah please have sabr ==> so that we may get the Big Picture

Question :

If the soul is breathed into the embryo after four months, are we to understand that the sperm which joins with the woman’s egg, from which the embryo is formed, has no soul, or what?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

Both the sperm and the ovum are alive in a sense which, if they are free from defects, prepares each of them to join with the other, if Allaah wills and decrees it to happen. When that happens, if Allaah wills it, the embryo is formed and is also alive in a manner that suits it and prepares it to grow and develop, moving through the known stages. When the soul is breathed into it, it becomes alive in another sense, by the permission of Allaah, the Subtle One, the Aware. No matter how a man tries, even if he is a highly-skilled doctor, he can never comprehend all the secrets and stages of development of pregnancy. Allaah says (interpretation of the meanings):

“Allaah knows what every female bears, and by how much the wombs fall short (of their time or number) or exceed. Everything with Him is in (due) proportion. All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Most Great, the Most High.” [al-Ra’d 13:8-9]

“Verily, Allaah! With Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs…” [Luqmaan 31:34]

(Fataawa Islamiyyah li’l-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 488).

Life is of varying kinds, and each being is alive in a manner that suits it by the power of Allaah. So plants are alive in a manner that suits them, sperm is alive in a manner that suits it, and man is alive in a manner that suits him, and so on. Allaah is the Creator of all this, and He has made water the basis of every living thing, as He says in the Qur’aan (interpretation of the meaning):

“Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” [al-Anbiya’ 21:30]

And Allaah knows best.
