Negative Perceptions of Islam Increasing

As the war in Iraq grinds into its fourth year, a growing proportion of Americans are expressing unfavorable views of Islam, and a majority now say that Muslims are disproportionately prone to violence, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The poll found that nearly half of Americans -- 46 percent -- have a negative view of Islam, seven percentage points higher than in the tense months after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, when Muslims were often targeted for violence.

The survey comes at a time of increasing tension; the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq show little sign of ending, and members of Congress are seeking to block the Bush administration's attempt to hire an Arab company to manage operations at six of the nation's ports. Also, Americans are reading news of deadly protests by Muslims over Danish cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.

Islam has always been misunderstood and associated with voilence for as long as I can tell. There is nothing new here. I'm just surprised that 46% of americans hold a negative perception of islam. I thought it was going to be much higher than that

When you consider it was 39% AFTER the bombings, and despite the sharp rise in reverts and more widespread knowledge and understanding of Islam's true ideology, that 46% is rather alarming.

Are you telling me that the majority of the US population has reasonable knowlegde about Islam and it' s message?. I don' t think so. The majority knows what the media feeds them and that information is certainly not in favour of muslims.

I AM telling you that it is a LOT more than what it was immediately post 9/11. As for the majority of Yanks, no, of course not. But they're a lot more educated about it than they were 5 years ago. A LOT more. That's why the sharp rise in % points is alarming. If you read the whole article, then you'll find that the comments of the school bus driver are the most troublesome.

Prophet Ismael was blessed with earthly wealth which then tranlated to agricultural wealth & later oil.They are had natural resources such as gold, diamond etc etc--where people as far as the greeks --or Alexandria used to travel to purchase.The Yuhuuds never had a constant land place to live.

Is the unfavourable view of islam due to bad communication, Islam itself or the behaviour of muslims?

I think its a combination of all 3. Unfortunately most muslims are unwilling to accept fault with Islam or the need for reformation -- which is inevitable historical necessity. So long as many opt to bury their heads in the sand and pretend all is good, Islam will continue to be misunderstood AND criticised.

Islam is misunderstood in America......But that's because of LACK of a HUGE Islamic presents in America....

Ppl only want to know about things that has or can effect them.....America didn't join WW2 till Japan hit peral Harbor.....same with the twin towers in my city...that's when WE Americans opened our eyes to the Islamic world around us.....


Unfortunatelly, since first impressions count, some Americans have some bitter judgments of Muslims abroad.....It's sad your religion has jihadic freaks who spread hatred and violence all under the name of Islam--and as we all know, it's the evil news that makes it to my 6 O'Clock news every night..
