LOOK AT THE TRAGEDY KHAT CAUSED IN HACKNEY.
KHAT IT OUT: THE LEAFY DRUG THEY WANT TO BAN
BY Sadaf Meehan
Campaigners have renewed calls to ban the drug khat, also known as qat, after an inquest found traces of it in the body of a father-of-four, who murdered his wife before hanging himself.
Somalian-born Saciid Dayib, 40, from Hackney, east London, stabbed his wife Fadumo Yusuf, 34, in the neck before battering her to death with a claw hammer. He was later found hanging in the hallway of their family home.
The inquest’s findings came after the government refused to ban the drug, despite it being a banned class A substance (the same as heroin and cocaine) in America.
LOSS
Speaking outside the hearing Fadumo’s brother-in-law, Adan Mohamed said: “As a family we are still trying to recover from our loss. We hope this will at least show what a terrible effect this drug can have on people. The government should make it illegal like other dangerous drugs.â€Â
Relatives of the couple said that Saciid had been out all night on the eve of the tragedy which took place last May, chewing the drug with friends. The inquest found he had not been drinking or taking any other drugs before the tragedy.
The next day police found Saciid hanging in the hallway. His wife’s battered body was lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom with the claw hammer and kitchen knife in the sink. The couple’s four children, three girls and a boy, all aged under 10, are now living with an aunt in Canada. All had been at school at the time of the deaths.
The coroner recorded a verdict of unlawful killing followed by suicide.
The drug is widely used in Somalian, Ethiopian and Yemeni communities and is legal in the UK, but campaigners have for some time been calling for it to be banned.
Lester Burke, a mental health worker who was awarded the MBE, has been campaigning against the drug for more than two years. He said: “The drug has a profound effect on many of my clients. Some of them are very aggressive, very depressed and unable to keep their money, which forces them to beg and steal to support their habit.â€Â
Despite this, Home Secretary Charles Clarke ruled against banning the drug last month.
A spokesperson for the Home Office said: “The Home Office decided against reclassifying khat on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs, who conducted research on the subject.â€Â
But Labour MP Mike Gapes, whose constituency Ilford South has a large Somalian Community, told us: “I am very disappointed that the government has decided not to put controls on this drug.
“I live in a constituency with a large Somalian community and I have many people, especially women, who contact me and express their concerns about the drug.
“They are particularly concerned about teenage boys who spend the days chewing khat and the impact this has on their educational achievement and behaviour.â€Â
He added that he would like the drug to be reclassified to a class C or class B drug, “at least the same as cannabis,†he said.
But Iain Ryrie, Director of Research at the Mental Health Foundation warns that it is unfair to single out khat when it is almost solely used by communities from the Horn of Africa. He argues that alcohol also leads to anti-social behaviour but there are no calls to ban it.
He said: “Khat is a nervous system stimulant and there are risks associated with it. There’s believed to be an increased risk of oral cancers and it’s believed to be associated with an increased risk of heart attack. So it’s not a very smart idea to chew it but then it’s not smart to drink large amounts of alcohol.â€Â

I KNOW ITS OUR CULTURE BUT WHEN PEOPLE BECOME OBSESSED AND CHEW DAILY AND DONT WORK, BECOME KHATDAHOLICS OR QAADAHOLICS THEN IT BECOMES SERIOUS. I KNOW ITS OUR CULTURE BUT WHEN IT CAUSES MENTAL ILLNESS AND PARANAIO AGGRESSIVENESS ALWAYS WANTING TO ARGUE FIGHT, TALKING TOO MUCH.
ATLEAST IF THEY CANT BAN IT REDUCE IT, THIS SHIT COMES DAILY NOT LET IT COME ON ONLY WEEKENDS OR MONTHLY. THE WEEKLY IDEA IS MORE REALISTIC TONNES THIS GRASS COMES IN.
I WOULD RATHER CHEW GRASS THEN EAT THIS CRAP, WHEN DID GRASS BECOME EATABLE IN HUMAN STOMACHS.
