What happened in Somalia is misunderstood by almost everyone. This nation had its norms, unwritten rules and social fabric unaffected by outsiders for thousands of years. It was called the land of Punt in Pharaohs time.

First came the Arabs who brought Islam plus their culture. As a result, somalia has more Abdis add Fatimas than all indigenous names combined. We should burn our ancestors for trading their history and culture for that of the Arabian Peninsula.

Then came the Europeans with two options on the menu: democracy and communism. 1st, somalia tried democracy, then communism failing both times miserably. Then we plunged into civil war.

Siad barre was not worse than any other African president and he's just a part of a much larger continental train wreck.

I read Aidid'r biography and he clearly states Siad Barre grabbed the country b4 he could and he always believed he not Siad Barre was the right person to overthrow the civilian government.

Siad Barre, Aidid and Abdulahi Yusuf were all friends and when one of them succeeded with his plan, the other two were jailed (they were very lucky he didn't eliminate them). So Aidid was also trying to ruin siad's accomplishment but definitely he was not responsible for Somalia's disintegration. Now, the cycle is complete and we are seeing two groups who are being funded by Arabs and west go at each other again.
