"China's huge abortion industry, fed by the country's brutally coercive population control program, has reportedly spawned a shockingly gruesome side market: the consumption of the bodies of aborted babies as food.

The Hong Kong Eastern Express published the findings of reporters from it sister magazine, Eastweek, on April 12. The reporters spoke to doctors and others in China who matter-of-factly described favorite recipes and extolled the "health benefits" of consuming the bodies of children killed by abortion.

Pro-life groups in Hong Kong told Eastern Star that they felt "a mixture of disgust and disbelief" when hearing of the barbaric practice.

The Hong Kong reporters traveled across the border to Shenzhen, China, to investigate the rumors of cannibalism. From the state-run Shenzhen Health Care for Women and Children, they were able to obtain, free of charge, a bottle filled with tiny bodies.

"There are ten fetuses here, all aborted this morning," a female doctor told the reporters. "You can take them. We are a state hospital and don't charge. Normally we doctors take them home to eat -- all free. Since you don't look well, you can take them."

Although these babies were given away, the report stated that the going rate for these children ranges from $1.28 to as much as $38 in some private clinics.

Shenzhen's largest medical facility, People's Hospital, performed over 7,000 abortions last year. Dr. Zou Qin of the Luo Hu Clinic told reporters, "They are wasted if we don't eat them."

Ironically, as this cannibalistic practice was reported, Chinese authorities were cracking down on the illegal consumption and distribution of protected reptile species, such as boa constrictors, king pythons, and pit vipers, according to an April 14 United Press International (UPI) article. But "unlike the serving of endangered reptiles," the UPI reported, "the human embryo-as-food trade is not illegal or underground in China.

The Eastweek reporters were given specific directions on the best type of body to use and the best way to cook him or her. Dr. Zou Qin expressed a preference for the children of "young women, and even better, the first baby and a male," and claimed to have eaten about 100 bodies in the past six months.

She continued with a detailed explanation of how to prepare them: "I wash them with clear water until they look transparent white and then stew them. Making soup is best." Zou conceded that they carry a heavy odor that may be too much for some to tolerate, according to the report.

Dr. Margaret Kwan, former chief executive of the Hong Kong Family Planning Association, told the Eastern Express that the reports were "the strangest thing I have ever heard coming out of China. I just hope it is not true."
