Muslim women got the ok
Sudanese Islamist leader said Friday in an interview that Muslim women should be free to marry Christian or Jewish men, defying the consensus among conventional Muslim jurists.
Hassan Turabi said that he came to this conclusion after hearing of a married American woman who wanted to convert to Islam but was told she must seek a divorce and possibly lose custody of her children.
"I could not find in the Quran or the Sunna a single word preventing a Muslim woman from marrying a Christian or Jew" he said.
"So I came to the opinion that they should let her convert and prove her faith. Often she would bring to Islam her husband and those around him and so on," he added.
Mr. Turabi made similar remarks at a meeting in Khartoum earlier this month but his detailed explanation in Asharq Al Awsat will reach a much wider audience.
A professor of Islamic studies at Cairo University, Abdul Sabour Shahin was quoted in the Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm as saying Turabi's opinion was nonsense.
"What Turabi is doing is obvious intellectual confusion. I would have thought he was above that. It's as if he were taking the side of the enemies of Islam," Shahin said.
Turabi said he was not speaking only about married women who want to convert to Islam but about all Muslim women. But it is especially relevant to Muslims living as minorities, he said.
"We must let Muslim minorities living with Christians and Jews... marry their daughters to Christians and Jews and perhaps these daughters, through their marital relationship, will bring Christians and Jews to Islam or preserve their own religion," he said.

Wow... I always admired Mr. Tuurabi..I watched him one time while he was making a speech in the OAU he was so Islamic and his opening remarks were all Islamic. I admired his confidence
But the girl who will bring a Christian to Islam should herself be a good muslim.. But if she herself was a loose girl who met the guy at the night clubs what can she convert?
I have heard there was this Somali girl who met a Scandenivian guy somewhere in Europe. She insisted that he should convert if he wants to marry her. The guy converted and married her. But after a while, he divorced her because she was not acting according to Islam

Personally, I don’t see the big deal in a woman marring a Christian/Jew since they are also “people of the bookâ€Â. If men are allowed to marry them, then so should women.

Lion, stop being a chauvinist pig.

^^I'm being a chauvanist pig for simply following Islamic rules?
Woow..you are really more brainwashed than you let on..First, you said u didn't believe in Capital punishment even though it's perfectly ok in Islam for those who kill..now this..what's next? U will ahve a problem with praying because it hurts your back or fasting harms your health?
U are on thin ice little girl..Perhaps you should pay more attention to your religion instead of following soccer religiously.

This is interesting, I like Turabi as well but this opinion of his will indeed get a strong reaction.
Hey Intellex do you have more to the story, like what evidence the sheikh has shown to support him, maybe this is just a exaggeration he might have only limited this to the case of the revert already married, ppl do tend to amplify, and this is very illogical without the whole story and argument, ppl should hesitate to judge just yet.
Somalisiz can you just call him that just like that, without even posting a hadith that suggests otherwise, if he directly opposed to a subject clearly stated in the Quran/sunnah ok…
