For Non-Somali forumers

Post by Sir-Luggoyo »

You guys have been in this medium for quite a while now, you have interacted with us in the cyber world (except Grant, who actually have been to the motherland) and you have been exposed to the real Xalimo and Farah albeit virtually, has your opinion changed -if you had an opinion about us to begin with - for the better or for the worse?

Would you entertain the idea of living among Somalis in reality? What are the short comings you have noticed which are exclusively Somali?

My opinions of Somalis really has changed since joining this medium. Before i joined i was a raging lunatic as well as a sex addict....Talking with somalis has really helped me calm down and become a person again...I'm no longer a beast trapped inside the body of a amazingly good looking 24 year old Sri Lankan boy.

And oh btw, following the tradition of Somalis, i have circumsized myself in my bathroom...Lost few pints of blood but i survived..I'm going to buy a macawiis next..so i can show off my newly circumsized penis.

They came from columbo, Sri lanka to travel through to Europe via the middle east through western asia. They stopped at bossaso and the dudes scammed them for there money man. It was wrong but I guess the guys scamming them were other sri lankans and not somali's. Plus can say that the first city to be a multi cultural city in post civil war somalia is BOSSASO Laughing

Good question, Lug. First, I DID have an opinion to begin with, and it was positive. From my first interaction with Somali's when I lived in Dixon, there was always a sense of "mystery" to them, as Somali's are very cliquish and keep to themselves. They much prefer to remain in the company of other Somali's. But coming here, and through the people i've met and interacted with here, i've gained a LOT of insight into the psyche of Somali's. Partciularly qabiil, and the large role it plays in the culture. And as a result, my opinion HAS changed. For the better, actually, despite the antics of a few here ( Wink ). And because of that insight, my relationships (real, not virtual) with them have improved. I've found that once they realize you have an understanding of their unique culture, they're quite embracing, as they know Somali culture is different, and a little more complex to understand for outsiders than other cultures. And when they know you have a firm grasp of it, their attitudes change dramatically. They're not as "aloof", or "standoffish." If ya know what I mean?

Would I entertain the idea of living among Somali's ?? Most definately. And with the way things are going now, it's almost inevitable. Laughing

Shortcomings ?? Maybe the "aloofness" I alluded to, though I don't consider it a shortcoming, except to the degree with which it is practised by sme Somali's. But one thing though i've noticed. Somali's (some, anyway) need to understand that with their unique, interesting culture and language (the Somali way of speaking proverbially is beautiful) people ARE gonna be intrigued, and show interest in them. And Somali's need to accept that, and not look at someone as if they're an alien for showing that interest. In fact, some almost resent it. Where most other cultures welcome the attention of an outsider who shows a willingness to learn, Somali's will view you with a great deal of suspicion if you show an interest. They wanna know why, and won't open up till they're convinced your intentions are pure. THAT is one "shortcoming" that is exclusively Somali. Laughing

Oh, and another thought. After reading Avwedly's post in Galol's theread, and I quote "All this fellow does is abuse those whose opinion he differs with " (in reference to Lugooyo) brings to mind another shortcoming. The trait of abusing those whose opinions they differ with. Laughing Laughing Laughing

^^ nonsense, all of a abrupt your a connoisseur on Somalis? dude walah you think you be acquainted with the Somali way but i can truthfully say; you distinguish NOTHING

just to give you a little pattern, you said Somalis need accept that others (such as your self) will be interested, intrigued

we identify that is going to ensue but the thing is dude, we and when i say 'we' i speak for a large number of Somalis (since i know my folk masses more than u) DO NOT appreciate, value any person other than a Somali to be engrossed in anything Somali, you see what am saying!

see man, you don't discern Somalis after all Laughing

apparently we don't like eachother but we find others that creep around us objectionable even supplementary

Mike

Good analysis, especially the suspicious pattern of the Skinnies, don't blame them, when they can't get along among themselves, what would they expect of an alien? As for AvowedlyStupid, he is the latest comer of a line of stupid morons who disgraced this medium particularly and Somalis in general, don't mind him.

I have an American (white) friend, I could say a very close friend, not just him but his whole family, his mom, dad and siblings, I became like a member of their family, I even vacation at their Summer home at the beaches of Long Beach Island in New Jersey. This dude was/is so much interested in Somalis and the Somali culture, I introduced him to some of my Somali friends, they weren't very friendly at first and when he tries to strike a conversation, they would answer him reservedly and cut the convo short, I was bombarded with questions like, why is he interested in us? What does he want from us? Why us? What is he up to? Is he a secret agent? I simply brushed off these questions and told them, he simply wants to know us, that is all. With time and persistency, he won some of my friends and is invited to their homes (he is very fond of Somali rice and goat meat, and loves to eat with his hands)

One day a friend of mine gave him a present, a traditional Somali milk container called Dhiil, first he wouldn't accept but the friend insisted, I could see tears welling in his eyes when he hesitantly accepted it, he smelled inside the container and exclaimed that the smell is familiar even though he is sure he never had anything similar b4.

If you are genuinely interested in Somalis, don't let the tirades depicted in this medium swerve you, in real life, they are sweet except the diaspora product who are mostly hooligans and have nothing Somali about them, they are no different from the next door Tyrone

if i learned something i learned that you can't be somali but you have to born somali.

otherthing i learned is somalis sounnd racist but they have clean hearths and when it comes to personal level they accept others. But in large group it's hard to be accepted. So, I always try to have one-one relation with somalis than having large group of them around me.

Is Sir Lug... trying to make-up with Kamal & Mad Mac?? How Bizarre.

Well back to the topic--Speaking from the perspective of the youth who never saw Somalia, the ex country; i would say-- i will never want to live there. After all-- people are a reflection of their country. I cannot survive in a third country anyway. The terrible weather, lack of aestheticism, both in people & Infrastructure. Lack of Star bucks or u know--our little mall worlds. I think i will be depressed if i lived in third world country like Somalia--which per se is NOT A country. Its essentially a jungle of the last mohechians. At any rate, i will die in the west--ideally in a small countrycottage in rural England --a small little cottage with white fence, rose garden & plants & flowers artificially attached to the wall of the cottage, not covering my square small glass clear window leading way to a beautiful view of green hill & healthy fat sheeps grazing abouts.
