Is the Kitaab kufr?
I am getting even more confused than usual. I hear that the people of the Book are considered adherents of the true faith and are acceptable residents within the community of Islam. I hear that all prophets must agree. I hear that the story told in the Quran is the same as that told in the Kitaab.
And then someone who quotes the Bible gets called Kuffaar. Can someone please explain.

Grant some corrections.
People of the book are respected becuase the lord sent them Prophets and Holy books and they adhere to some tenents of the true faith.
We believe that the religion of Abraham and Moses were essentially Islam and that people deviated from it, and the books have been editted by human hand over the years.
As you are aware there are allot of similiarites between Biblical stories and the Quran, but we do not take the bible for instructionm the Quran is the only authentic word of God.
However we as muslims cannot disrespect the bible becuase some of it is still Gods word, and so it is still Holy.

If Islam accords "respect" to Jews and christians, how do you explain this hadith:
“ Allah's Messenger said: Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you, and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it. “
(Sahih Bukhari Book 25, Number 5389 Narrated Abu Hurayrah)

Grant I've sought to pose the same question once before as to why Islam is belligerent toward Jews and Christians, and unfortunately received no satisfactory answer other than empty reminders to trust that Islam is a peaceful and loving religion.
Evidently as is illustrated in the hadith, the prophet of Islam Mohammed ibn Abdullah had his own opinions as to what "respect" and tolerance meant.

Don't be confused. The word kufr is Arabic word came from root word "to reject" Kufur means who rejects the truth when it exposed to him or her. Here the truth is Quran. Christian and Jewish in Arab peninsula knew that Prophet Mohammed is the same Prophet mentioned in their books and as God said in the Quran " Those, people of book, know this is the truth as they know thier sons" But they chose to reject the truth that is why they were called Kufar or disbelievers and that means they rejected the truth which is Quran and Mohammed's prophethood.
To explain more what word Kufr or Kafir means here Quran explains it self here in Surat Al-bayenah:
"Those who (kafaro)disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and among Al-Mushrikun, were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence".

Grant,
Good old man, don't fall for Islam's cunning mealy-mouthed platitudes about respect and acceptance for the ppl of the 'book.'
In Islam the world is divided into 2 halfs: the Halals and the Harams (Nijas). YOU my friend, despite being a person of the book, are NIJAS. Too dirty to set a foot in Mecca and Medina but the WORST muslim is always welcome. Merit is anethema to Islam.
The acid test for Islam's tolerance is who is accepted into Mecca and Medina. Further, do you know that a dying filipino or a hindu can't get final prayers from their religioius holymen because no 2 religions can co-exist in the land of the Holy and pure.

You seem obcessed with visiting Mecca and Medina.
i dont really understand why..
I mean i have no interest in entering the Vatican,
nor the Golden temople of the sikhs in Armitsar.
Why are you a Kaafir interested in visiting our Holy Land.
If its plain curiosity why dont you go ahead and do so.
I mean Richard Burton pretended to be an Afghan and visited Mecca.
