Forgotten horror

SOMALIA is a catastrophe we ignore at our peril.

Fifteen years of anarchy and gun law in a forgotten country nearly 4,500 miles away now have daily consequences on OUR streets, in the form of murder, robbery and rape.

At least 100,000 Somalis have fled here from a land where millions face starvation and rival warlords battle for control using drug-addled kids toting AK-47s.

Where a human being’s life is as cheap as the 13p bullet that could end it at any moment.

Most arrive in Britain seeking only a better life. A small minority import the violence and lawlessness they have grown up with.

Of course, we cannot tolerate these hardened thugs. They must be sent back to Somalia without hesitating over their human rights.

But the West, through the UN, must also do more to tackle the root cause of the problem.

As we report in today's Sun newspaper, Somalia is forgotten because it is unsafe for journalists who could highlight its plight, and the aid agencies who could help rebuild it.
