Press release - Somaliland Society UK The Anniversary of SomalilandÂ’s 46th Independence from Britain Posted by: qaran


We will always remember the sense of euphoria that every Somalilander felt in his heart on 26-06-1960, when Somaliland declared its independence and hoped to embark on the road towards democratic government and prosperity, but that expectation short-lived after the union with Southern Somalia on 01-07-1960.

We will also never forget the elation and joy of 18-05-1991, when Somaliland reclaimed its independence to bring back peopleÂ’s hopes and aspirations. Somaliland has accomplished much in the past fifteen years and has overcome serious conflicts without any help from the International Community.

As we celebrate this special occasion, let us continue to work wholeheartedly for the development of our beloved country. Somaliland community in the Diaspora should continue to assist our people in Somaliland in order to realise the dreams of our forefathers; to secure an independent, democratic Somaliland that can take its rightful place among the nations of the free world.

The future holds many opportunities for Somaliland. Somali Landers every where must take an active part in the rebuilding of Somaliland institutions. We must continue to cooperate with the non-governmental sectors in order to encourage further democratic growth in all sectors of society. We must also help to encourage private and foreign investment in Somaliland, as it is vital for the development of SomalilandÂ’s economy.

After 15 years of reclaiming our Independence, we have still not been recognised by the international community, but we should not despair. This certainly requires more effort on the part of the Somaliland Government, but nevertheless we have to be proud of what we have achieved as country which operates on very scarce resources. Peace and stability, witnessed by those living in Somaliland, those who visit the country and every one who follows the affairs of Somaliland, is our greatest asset. We urge every Somalilander living in Somaliland and abroad to contribute to the sustenance of this peace. We particularly urge the Somaliland government, the opposition parties of Kulmiye & UCID, both the Houses of Parliament and the House of the Elders, and the Somaliland High court to work together for the common interest of the country, to work together in resolving complex and difficult issues of sensitive nature that can be counter productive to our greatest asset: PEACE & STABILITY

On this occasion Somaliland Society UK sends its warmest greetings to all Somalilanders both in the homeland and beyond its borders. Let us be united in our efforts to secure better future for the Somaliland nation.
