my laptop wont switch on at all

my laptop has Windows ME on it.Sometimes it would switch itself off and then when I wanted to try and start it it would just make really loud bleeps and not come on.Then it worked for a few attempts and now it wont switch on at all. I think the adaptor may be faulty as when I wiggle the wires the lights flicker. It is battery powered . Any suggestions? Crying or Very sad
