Any analyst can tell you all of this. There is, of course, a rest of the story. And that is that on the other side, since 1948, there has been no effort to do anything other than encourage conflict with Israel. This has given license to Israeli leadership to execute these policies and justify them.

The Israeli society has been split for a long time. But security has always been the trump card. And that has allowed men like Sharon to justify the settlements and anneation of land in the name of security. The Egyptians figured this all out and cut a deal while that was possible. Had they not, Israel would still own the Sinai, as they hold the Golan.
