The only thing I don't like about the UIC
I am, by all means a staunch fan of the UIC, what they stand for and what they have achieved so far, granted, with the support of the public. They have outdone themselves in every sense of the word and they proved to be the saviors of the common man of Mog and environs. However, their relentless copycat of Arab culture is an embarrassment to any full bloodied Somali who is proud of his heritage, culture and Somalinness.
What we share with Arabs (the Muslim ones) is the beautiful religion of Islam and some words that got attached to our language, but the thing that drives me nuts everytime I come acroos is, when I see a Wadaad calling himself Abu Qataada, Abu Xafsa, Abu Abdulla.. etc etc etc, the "Abu" thing is an age old Arab culture where the father takes the first born son's name prefixed with the word Abu. That was never a Somali thing, the closest we had was, the son being called with his father's name prefixed by "Ina" the "son of"
I see this trend in most of the leadership of the Wadaado and I ain't liking it a bit, it ain't Islamic, it is an age old Arab culture that was there even in pre Islam era.

You got a point but as you know it's hard to take out some Arab cultures from Islam. Because simply the first generation and rightious khalifas were an Arab.... For example the dress like dash-dasha, Omamah, the names.
Prophet's 'konya' was Abu Qasim. His Son who dead when he was a child. Many things they used to do and continued after Islam. For example names like Umar, Ali, Khadija,....etc. Umar was Umar before his Islam. Abu Bakar was Abu bakar before his Islam and so on.
You can't whipe out all their haritage and culture specially when the Quran was revieled their language.

Whats wrong with that? Its not haram. At least 10-30% of the somali language is words from Arabic. Should we make up new words?
It was practised by the Ashaba at the time of the prophet pbuh right?. Its better then using the Haram nick names somalis use to describe a person, for example if Dheere, Qanyare, Gacmay, sanay ect....(sorry for my somali)
In addition to that As muslims we should learn arabic.

This is not a trend initited or set by the prophet (SAW) nor the Sahabah, but as I said, an age old culture of the Arabs, even in the Jaahiliya days and we have the equivalent of that, we have "Ina hebel" I know that they are not as ignorant as to think this is Islamic but simply to sound Arabic and close to Arabs.
How come no Arab calls himself "Ina" Cawad? This is a degree of self-loathe. Check how ridiculous it sounds when attached to genuine Somali name "Abu Yalaxow" "Abu Qowdhan" "Abu Shirwac" "Abu Cawaale" "Abu Guled" it sounds odd to say the least and maybe the Wadaado need some rehab in self-esteem.

SL,
I too noticed their names, but as many on this thread have already said, there is nothing wrong with this trend. It was a common practise by the Arabs before, during & after the Prophet (saw).
From what I understand they are trying to follow the traditions of the salaful-saalixuun (companions of the Prophet 'saw').
Allahu Aclam.

Sir, I got your point however what I was saying is : People follow the first generation of Muslims whom happened to be an Arabs. I understand and know that was before Islam. Even the name of the Prophet was pre-Islam and some Arab were named it. There was some sourses say there was 7 people before Prophet named Mohammed.
So do you suggest that Somalis and other Muslims to not name Mohammed, Omar, Ali..just because Arab jahili were naming them?
Some Arab cultures were not against Islam and prophet approved them..So they became part of Islamic culture.

Nimaankaasi dhibka ugu weyn ee ay la iman doonaan waa afar naagood isla guursiga....
So far they are good.... At least compared to war-lords and anarchy...
It will all depend on who the leaders are... Are they educated wadaaddo or ignorant ones? When a so called wadaad is at the stage of Wal-Casri they are very dangerous and they know nothing about Quran and our rich Religion....Let us wait and see... with positive hope...
