Ethiopias 70 Million population claim?

Do you know that Diredawa is the second largest city which has only 250,000 people:

Dire Dawa (which means “empty plain”) is one of two chartered cities (astedader akabibi) in Ethiopia (the other being the capital, Addis Ababa). This city is the second largest in Ethiopia.
http://www.answers.com/topic/dire-dawa

Compare that to just Hargeisa which tried counting its population and could not find any more funds after passing the 1/2 milion mark. Also Burco has recorded a population numbers of 60,0000:

"The Hargeisa Group Hospital is one of the primary healthcare facilities serving the estimated 1.5 million people living in or near the city of Hargeisa, Somalia."
http://www.directrelief.org/sections/in ... malia.html

So can you guys try and add up cos if I compared the old Somalia and Ethiopia. The old Somalia should be claiming the 70 Milion figure and not people with whose second largest city is Diredawa.

There is time and place for things you said in the above. You were suppose to tell me where the other 70-14.5 are at instead of dissing Allah Doori nation.

There are higher estimates for both countries, but this is what Airninja gives:

Ethiopia http://www.airninja.com/worldfacts/coun ... lation.htm

2000 64,117,452
2001 65,891,874
2002 67,673,031
2003 66,557,553
2004 67,851,281
2005 73,053,286

Ethiopia is expected to grow at the rate of 3.1% a year for the rest of this century.

Somalia http://www.airninja.com/worldfacts/coun ... lation.htm

2000 7,253,137
2001 7,488,773
2002 7,753,310
2003 8,025,190
2004 8,304,601
2005 8,591,629

Grant,

The problem is "estimates" u c. Why is Ethiopia estimated to be 70 Million and Somalia only about 7 Million?

Again, they should begin from the Diredawa's "estimate" and apply it to the rest of the cities.

Crazy
In neither country are you going to get precise surveys.

However, all you have to do is go to Somalia, and you can see there aren't a lot of people. And the reason is simple. Water. Somalia doesn't have a lot of water, the highlands of Ethiopia is dripping wet. They have always supported a larger population base and always will.

This is becuase somalia is now more urbanized than ethiopia.
Due to worsening conditions for Pastoralists, they are moving towards the cities, and now the majority of somalis live near the urban areas.

In 1990 75% of the population were still rural and pastoral,

Ethiopias population still live in the villages and not in the cities.

And Ethiopia also has a lot of cities in the 100,000 to 200,000 range. Mog is much smaller than Addis, and while Hargeisa is decent sized, after that all the cities are pretty small. Esspecially when you remove the refugee population.

Bottom line is there are a lot more highlanders than there are Somalis. For obvious reasons. That, and not some sort of special military prowess, is the reason why the Ethiopians have dominated the Ogaden.
