I lost hope with the UN when I saw them spending too much time on whether arms embargo on Somali mafias shall be lifted or not instead of going to Muqdisho to take advantage of the calm there after the UIC took over from warlord fiefdoms.
Isn't it time the Muqdisho people where given vaccinations against polio etc. They never had such opportunities cos the UN use to make excuses for not going to Muqdisho.

I hate to be a spoil sport, but I do wonder if Blackhawk Down and the Martin Adler affair have anything to do with this?
Eighteen thousand new refugees in Dadaab this year. Thirty thousand in Yemen who want the UN to move them to a third country.
The Clinton Administration decided the ungrateful Somalis were simply not worth the effort. Do you suppose the UN could be close to a similar decision?
Alla ha u naxariisto.

the UN's job was humanitarian assistance not experimental nation building exercise, and joining a full scale civil conflict while clearly taking sides.

It is my understanding the Aideed was shortstopping all the food aid and that 50-300,000 Somalis died because Clinton and the UN backed down.
I see an attempt to feed both sides in the face of a drought as being humanitarian, not a one-sided participation in a civil war. I see Clinton's rapid backdown as supporting this interpretation.

the nearly 300,000 died before the intevention not after,
and this occured becuase of the general warefare in those regions,
and not any particular action by aideed.
what you got was anti-aideed propaganda by the UN.
by the time clinton was elected, the famine was stabilized

Gurey is right.
The starvation was full blown before the UN even came to Somalia. Maxamed Siyaad's occupation of Bay and Bakool lead to warfare and looting of the Eelay farms. By the time the UN came to Somalia, the starvation had decimated thousands.
Aidid never stole any food from the UN. He in fact helped publicize the crisis by centering in the areas where there was massive starvation such as Bardheere, and Baydhaba. The UN Sec. General Boutros Boutros Ghali concuted a story that militiamen where stealing food and thus causing the starvation as a pretext of sending in foreign soldiers.
UNITAF (US operations) went to Somalia, they did a good job in providing aid but kept clear of local politics. Their mission was a success but that idiot CLinton screwed it up with the UN's nation building.
