Somalia: Seven Countries to Send Troops to War-Torn Country

Seven countries yesterday resolved to deploy soldiers to keep peace in Somalia in a few weeks.

They have started revising an Operational Deployment Mission Plan for presentation to the UN Security Council to allow for the lifting of an arms embargo in the region.

They are Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Uganda.

Foreign Affairs assistant minister Moses Wetang'ula said Kenya had trained 200 police officers for Somalia, when he opened a meeting of Inter-Governmental Authority on Development defence chiefs in Nairobi yesterday.

Although Igad Heads of State had directed the officers to deploy the soldiers to Somalia two years ago, the UN demanded a revised detailed deployment plan.

The officials were yesterday looking at logistics for the deployment, composition and mandate of force to pave the way for the deployment.

Mr Wetang'ula said the deployment would be done "in a couple of weeks or months."

He said the defence heads would also come up with a time-frame for the deployment and required protection gear.

Chief of General Staff J.M. Kianga, who chaired the meeting at Grand Regency Hotel, said: "There's urgency in this deployment and we need to move faster to make the plan a reality."

Mr Wetang'ula said the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) was not totally opposed to deployment of forces to Somalia.


"I spoke to the union leader and we are trying to bring them on board so that they could be part of the process. The issue could be discussed, agreed on and understood," he said.

He said the troops would not be an occupation force but would only help Somali realise peace and work closely with the Transitional Federal Institutions.

Talks between the government and Islamic courts were crucial to improve conditions for deployment of forces, he said.

Well, there will be many mass graves for the soldiers from those 7 countries inshaa Allaah. No matter if they are AIDS-infected devils from Ethiopia or muslim somalis from Jabuuti, I hope that they all get f*cked because the only reason why they are coming is to wage war against muslims and defend munaafiqiin.
