A COUPLE have gone through a bizarre divorce after a husband decided to have a sex change without telling his wife.

Stephen Everett, from The Street in Capel, had been happily married to Catherine Everett for seven years, during which time the couple had two children.

But all along Mr Everett, 41, was hiding a shocking secret - he really wanted to be a woman.

Now Mrs Everett, who lives in Fetcham, has spoken of the moment she discovered her husband's double-life, when she saw him playing with his new breasts in the bathroom.

She has also revealed how the sex swapper used to wear a dress while picking their children up from school.

The couple met 11 years ago while working in the same pizza restaurant.

They married in spring 1999 and their children are now aged seven and five.

It was after the birth of their second child that Mrs Everett first began to suspect something was wrong, as her husband's behaviour became more erratic.

Then one day, as she walked into the bathroom to talk to her husband, she got a huge shock.

Mrs Everett, of The Drive, said: "I opened the bathroom door. He was standing there naked and he had small, round breasts.

"I couldn't think straight. My head was all over the place. Later that night we tried to talk about it.

"I kept thinking, 'how could I not have known?' But then I thought back at how strangely he had been acting and it all seemed to fall into place."

Mrs Everett, who says there was "nothing feminine" about her husband when they first met, claims he was "very much a lad" who "loved going out with his mates".

But as their relationship progressed, she struggled to cope with his increasingly obvious feminine side.

The 26-year-old said: "He started wearing a dress to pick the kids up from school. Everyone knew what we were going through."

She added: "Stephen tried wearing men's clothes but he'd always go back to his dresses, high heels and handbags.

"We would go out with the children and people would shout 'freak!'.

"When he took the kids swimming he wore a bikini. I knew we had to divorce."

The pair's divorce was finalised in January and they now live separate lives.

Mrs Everett, who spoke out in the Sunday Mirror on Sunday, says she feels "betrayed" by her estranged husband.

Mr Everett, who now calls himself Stephanie, had been taking female hormone pills during the marriage.

He is set to have a full sex-change operation next year.

Mr Everett told the Sunday Mirror, which is part of the same group as the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser: "It was never intended to happen until after our divorce.

"My utmost priorty is, and always will be, the care and wellbeing of our children."
